The database and information retrieval communities have long been recognized as being irreconcilable. Today, however, we witness a surprising convergence of the techniques used by both communities in decentralized, large-scale environments. The newly emerging field of reputation based trust management, borrowing techniques from both communities, best demonstrates this claim. We argue that incomplete knowledge and increasing autonomy of the participating entities are the driving forces behind this convergenc

A novel concept of a recycle loop reactor is developed with structured filamentous catalysts integrated as trays in a staged bubble column. The reactor can be operated in batch or continuous mode. Woven fabrics of activated carbon fibers (ACF) were used as support for the Pd catalyst. The loop reactor was tested in the 2-butyne-1,4-diol hydrogenation showing selectivity up to 97% towards 2-butene-1,4-diol at conversions up to 80%. The reactor behavior was described quant. assuming an ideally mixed reactor a

For many years various countries with access to commercial reprocessing services have been routinely recycling plutonium as UO2/PuO 2 mixed oxide (MOX) fuel in light water reactors (LWRs). This LWR MOX recycle strategy is still widely regarded as an interim step leading to the eventual establishment of sustainable fast reactor fuel cycles. The OECD/NEA Working Party on the Physics of Plutonium Fuels and Innovative Fuel Cycles (WPPR) has recently completed a review of the technical options for plutonium mana

A process for prepg. a water sol. polymer comprises: providing a polymn. reaction mixt. comprising one or more polymerizable ethylenically unsatd. monomers; polymg. the ethylenically unsatd. monomers; and adding to the reaction mixt. during polymn. one or more chain branching agents (e.g., methylenebisacrylamide) either continuously or semi-continuously, the semi-continuous addn. further comprising at least two discrete addns. The polymers, typically acrylamide-based, have improved flocculating and dewateri

The Buss-Kneader has proven to be a suitable reactor for the polymerization of acrylates. In this second part, the polymerization of methyl methacrylate and the ter- polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA), hydroxyethyl methacrylate and n-butylmethacrylate is carried out in a pilot Buss-Kneader. The reactor had to be pressurized up to about 10 bars to avoid evaporation of MMA. Instabilities in output rate and temperature profiles were observed as a result of fluctuating the pressures. Because of good mi

A review. Scale-up and/or scale-down procedures are crucial during the development of chem. processes. These procedures should be integrated to form a multidisciplinary approach encompassing several branches of science and engineering. The challenge is to find a balance between chem., design, environment, hygiene and safety (EHS) compliance and economic factors. The iterative process of scale-up procedures also requires concept discrimination at early stages of process development. Scale-up studies should p

5-amino-6-methyl-2-benzimidazolone (AMBI), used in the manufacture of dyes, was characterised as a biorecalcitrant compound by means of different biodegradability tests. In order to enhance the biodegradability of this important pollutant, the application of Advanced Oxidation Process (AOPs) as a pre-treatment was explored. Some experiments were addressed to find the most efficient AOP. The systems H2O2/hv, TiO2/H2O2/hv, Fe3+/hv, Fe3+/H2O2 and Fe3+/H2O2/hv were compared. The photo-Fenton system was the most

A microchannel reactor specially designed for periodic operation and a process to deposit a catalyst, g-alumina, inside the reactor channels were developed. The hydrodynamics of the reactor was characterised. Although the flow in the microchannels is laminar, a uniform radial concentration profile and consequently a narrow residence time distribution were obtained. Depending on the manufacturing method the Bodenstein number was found to be Bo=ud/Dm=~70. The catalytic coating had no influence on this distrib

The electrochem. behavior of PbO2 and synthetic B-doped diamond thin film electrodes (BDDs) was studied in acid media contg. 4-chlorophenol (4-CP) by bulk electrolysis under different exptl. conditions. To quantify the electrochem. activity of a given electrode, for the electrochem. oxidn. of org. compds. (4-CP), the current efficiency of the anodic oxidn. was normalized taking into consideration mass-transport limitations. The normalized current efficiency (j) was defined as the ratio between the current e

Water management in urban areas is a complex task because of the several interactions that exist between the different facets of the urban water system (surface and subsurface water, sewer system, water supply system, water and wastewater treatment plant, etc) and the many stakeholders in this context. It is necessary to reconsider current practices in order to shift from a sectored approach towards an integrated and global one. Such an approach implies that for each decision that has to be taken or each op

The use of glass fibers in the form of woven cloth (GFC), as a new type of catalytic support, was studied for the reduction of aqueous nitrate solutions using a Pd/Cu–GFC catalyst. The activity (per gram Pd) and selectivity to nitrogen were found to be comparable with those found for Pd–Cu catalysts supported on the other carriers. The maximal initial removal activity was found for a catalyst with a Pd/(Pd+Cu) ratio of 0.81. The corresponding activity was 0.7 mmol min-1 (gPd)-1, and the selectivity was 97 m

A review without refs. on new concepts for chem. processes such as non-stationary process control, microreactors, and structured packings. Glass fiber catalysts with modified and/or coated surfaces are presented with 2 reactor concepts: packed bubble column and trickling film reactor. [on SciFinder (R)]
