Visual data play a crucial role in modern society, and the rate at which images and videos are acquired, stored, and exchanged every day is rapidly increasing. Image compression is the key technology that enables storing and sharing of visual content in an ...

Recent advances in image compression have made it both possible and desirable for image quality to approach the visually lossless range. However, the most commonly used subjective visual quality assessment protocols, e.g. those reported in ITU-T Rec. BT.50 ...

Due to the increasing number of pictures captured and stored every day by and on digital devices, lossy image compression has become inevitable to limit the needed storage requirement. As a consequence, these compression methods might introduce some visual ...

Lossy image compression is a popular, simple and effective solution to reduce the amount of data representing digital pictures. In most lossy compression methods, the reduced volume of data in bits is achieved at the expense of introducing visual artifacts ...

Nowadays, image and video are the data types that consume most of the resources of modern communication channels, both in fixed and wireless networks. Thus, it is vital to compress visual data as much as possible, while maintaining some target quality leve ...

The rapid development of digital imaging and video has placed visual contents in the heart of our lives. Digital multimedia span a vast number of areas from business to leisure, including but not limited to education, medicine, accessibility, training, adv ...

This paper presents a quality evaluation study of point cloud codecs that have been recently standardised by the MPEG committee. In particular, a subjective experiment to assess their performance in terms of bitrate against visual quality is designed and r ...

Visual distortions in processed 360-degree visual content and consumed through head-mounted displays (HMDs) are perceived very differently when compared to traditional 2D content. To better understand how compression-related artifacts affect the overall pe ...

Since 1895, when the Lumière brothers came out with the projected cinematograph, motion pictures and more generally multimedia contents have considerably improved and are still experiencing a very dynamic development. Advances involved improving various mo ...

Light field representation promises to overcome the limitations of stereoscopic representation by allowing for a more seamless transition between multiple points of views, thus giving a more faithful representation of 3D scenes. However, in order to take f ...

In the last years, light field imaging has experienced a surge of popularity among the scientific community for its capability of rendering the 3D world in a more immersive way. In particular, several compression algorithms have been proposed to efficientl ...

Full immersion inside a Virtual Reality (VR) scene requires six Degrees of Freedom (6DoF) applications where the user is allowed to perform translational and rotational movements within the virtual space. The implementation of 6DoF applications is however ...

Point clouds have recently emerged as a promising and practical solution to code 3D visual information for immersive applications. Among other challenges, objective and subjective quality assessments are still open problems for this type of visual data rep ...

Given the increasing popularity of real-time video communication over enterprise wireless networks, ensuring good quality of experience is becoming critical. A common problem in such networks is that the clients typically adopt the strategy of associating ...

Recent trends in multimedia technologies indicate a significant growth of interest for new imaging modalities that aim to provide immersive experiences by increasing the engagement of the user with the content. Among other solutions, point clouds denote an ...

Point clouds are a promising alternative for immersive representation of visual contents. Recently, an increased interest has been observed in the acquisition, processing and rendering of this modality. Although subjective and objective evaluations are cri ...

Recently, there has been an increased interest in capture, processing and rendering of visual content in form of point clouds. Among other challenges, subjective and objective quality evaluation of point clouds are still open problems. Most proposed subjec ...

Over the last decades, several technological revolutions have impacted the television industry, such as the shifts from black & white to color and from standard to high-definition. Nevertheless, further considerable improvements can still be achieved to pr ...

This paper reports the details and results of a subjective and objective quality evaluation assessing responses to an MPEG call for evidence (CfE) on high dynamic range (HDR) and wide color gamut video coding. Five HDR video contents, compressed at four bi ...

Omnidirectional visual content is a form of representing graphical and cinematic media content which provides subjects with the ability to freely change the direction of view. Along with virtual reality, omnidirectional imaging is becoming a very important ...
