Computer systems rely heavily on abstraction to manage the exponential growth of complexity across hardware and software. Due to practical considerations of compatibility between components of these complex systems across generations, developers have favou ...

The popular isolation level multiversion Read Committed (RC) exchanges some of the strong guarantees of serializability for increased transaction throughput. Nevertheless, transaction workloads can sometimes be executed under RC while still guaranteeing se ...

While serializability always guarantees application correctness, lower isolation levels can be chosen to improve transaction throughput at the risk of introducing certain anomalies. A set of transactions is robust against a given isolation level if every p ...

The expeditious proliferation of Internet connectivity and the growing adoption of digital products have transformed various spheres of our everyday lives. This increased digitization of society has led to the emergence of new applications, which are deplo ...

Database workloads have significantly evolved in the past twenty years. Traditional database systems that are mainly used to serve Online Transactional Processing (OLTP) workloads evolved into specialized database systems that are optimized for particular ...

Modern large-scale data platforms manage colossal amount of data, generated by the ever-increasing number of concurrent users. Geo-replicated and sharded key-value data stores play a central role when building such platforms. As the strongest consistency m ...

Spectre, Meltdown, and related attacks have demonstrated that kernels, hypervisors, trusted execution environments, and browsers are prone to information disclosure through micro-architectural weaknesses. However, it remains unclear as to what extent other ...

Geo-replicated data platforms are at the backbone of several large-scale online services. Transactional Causal Consistency (TCC) is an attractive consistency level for building such platforms. TCC avoids many anomalies of eventual consistency, eschews the ...

Modern server hardware is increasingly heterogeneous as hardware accelerators, such as GPUs, are used together with multicore CPUs to meet the computational demands of modern data analytics workloads. Unfortunately, query parallelization techniques used by ...

FPGAs rely on massive datapath parallelism to accelerate applications even with a low clock frequency. However, applications such as sparse linear algebra and graph analytics have their throughput limited by irregular accesses to external memory for which ...

Geo-replicated data platforms are the backbone of several large-scale online services. Transactional Causal Consistency (TCC) is an attractive consistency level for building such platforms. TCC avoids many anomalies of eventual consistency, eschews the syn ...

We establish a theorem called the PCL theorem, which states that it is impossible to design a transactional memory algorithm that ensures (1) parallelism, i.e., transactions do not need to synchronize unless they access the same application objects, (2) ve ...

As hardware evolves, so do the needs of applications. To increase the performance of an application, there exist two well-known approaches. These are scaling up an application, using a larger multi-core platform, or scaling out, by distributing work to mul ...

Our work addresses the problem of placement of threads, or virtual cores, onto physical cores in a multicore NUMA system. Different placements result in varying degrees of contention for shared resources, so choosing the right placement can have a large ef ...

The increase in the number of cores in processors has been an important trend over the past decade. In order to be able to efficiently use such architectures, modern software must be scalable: performance should increase proportionally to the number of all ...

Portability and efficiency are usually antagonists in multi-core computing. In order to develop efficient code, one needs to take into account the topology of the target multi-cores (e.g., for locality). This clearly hampers code portability. In this paper ...

We introduce OPTIK, a new practical design pattern for designing and implementing fast and scalable concurrent data structures. OPTIK relies on the commonly-used technique of version numbers for detecting conflicting concurrent operations. We show how to i ...

Modern hardware is abundantly parallel and increasingly heterogeneous. The numerous processing cores have non-uniform access latencies to the main memory and processor caches, which causes variability in the communication costs. Unfortunately, database sys ...

Micro-architectural behavior of traditional disk-based online transaction processing (OLTP) systems has been investigated extensively over the past couple of decades. Results show that traditional OLTP mostly under-utilize the available micro-architectural ...
