Conformal phased arrays can be found in many applications due to their ability to fit tridimensional surfaces and, thanks to their scanning performance, can excel planar arrays. However, most of the previously proposed analysis methods can be applied only ...

Achieving reactive robot behavior in complex dynamic environments is still challenging as it relies on being able to solve trajectory optimization problems quickly enough, such that we can replan the future motion at frequencies which are sufficiently high ...

Rare events include many of the most interesting transformation processes in condensed matter, from phase transitions to biomolecular conformational changes to chemical reactions. Access to the corresponding mechanisms, free-energy landscapes and kinetic r ...

Perimeter control based on Macroscopic Fundamental Diagram (MFD) aims to meter the number of transferring vehicles at the periphery of the protected urban region in order to obtain the desired number of vehicles in that region. The advantage of perimeter c ...

In the last decade, the integration of Renewable Energy Sources (RESs) in distribution networks has been constantly increasing due to their many technical, economical, and environmental benefits. However, the large-scale penetration of RESs is limited by t ...

The EU FASTGRID project aimed at improving the REBCO conductor in order to enhance its economical attractiveness for the Superconducting Fault Current Limiter (SFCL). Two approaches were simultaneously investigated: i) the reduction of the tape length thro ...

Metasurfaces (MSs) are the 2-D equivalent of metaterials, the latter being a class of artificial engineered materials exhibiting peculiar electromagnetic properties [1], [2]. Generally constructed as arrays of deeply sub-wavelength resonant particles on a ...

The paper describes a coupling of the geometric Volume-of-Fluid (VOF) method with a sharp-interface phase-change model for Cartesian and axisymmetric grids. Both the interfacial position and the temperature field are resolved with subgrid accuracy. Species ...

This paper analyzes the implementation of least-mean-squares (LMS)-based, adaptive diffusion algorithms over networks in the frequency-domain (FD). We focus on a scenario of noisy links and include a moving-average step for denoising after self-learning to ...

Micropollutants (MP) with varying ozone-reactive moieties were spiked to lake water in the influent of a drinking water pilot plant consisting of an ozonation followed by a biological sand filtration. During ozonation, 227 transformation products (OTPs) fr ...

This thesis focuses on the numerical analysis of partial differential equations (PDEs) with an emphasis on first and second-order fully nonlinear PDEs. The main goal is the design of numerical methods to solve a variety of equations such as orthogonal maps ...

Objective. Recent results have shown the potentials of neural interfaces to provide sensory feedback to subjects with limb amputation increasing prosthesis usability. However, their advantages for decoding motor control signals over current methods based o ...

In the presence of plant-model mismatch, the estimation of plant gradients is key to the performance of measurement-based iterative optimization schemes. However, gradient estimation requires time-consuming experiments, wherein the plant is sequentially pe ...

Significant characteristics and main consequences of the 5.5 magnitude earthquake that struck Zagreb and its surroundings in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic are presented in the paper. Although, from the seismologic aspect, the earthquake was of moderat ...

The seismic performance of buildings depends critically on the stiffness and strength of storey diaphragms. Whilst for modern reinforced concrete or steel structures the connection between floors and lateral resisting members is often assumed as monolithic ...

Tsunami, impulse-waves and dam-break waves afflict humanity with casualties and damages. An insight into the flow mechanisms of these waves is important to provide safety and reduce reconstruction costs. This experimental study focuses on the effect of bed ...

We show the directional excitation of Bloch surface waves controlled by the magnetic field of light. The phenomenon in play is the first magnetic spin-orbit interaction of light. It opens new degrees of freedom in the manipulation of light and offers appea ...

Filling materials may exist in all scales of rock fractures, not only influencing seismic wave attenuation, but controlling rock mass instability. The objective of this study is to experimentally investigate the seismic response of rock fractures filled wi ...

In this opening presentation we will first recall the main characteristics of graphene conductivity and electromagnetic wave propagation on graphene-based structures. Based on these observations and different graphene antenna simulations from microwave to ...

Mathematical models, along with scientific theory and practical experiments, are a crucial part of modern engineering and science. The author takes a look at the role mathematical models play in topics ranging from vascular simulation to weather forecastin ...
