Fluidic actuation enables movement in a wide range of mechanical systems, from simple laboratory devices to more complex industrial machinery. Fluids are used to generate motion of mechanical pieces. The term "fluids" encompasses two types of technologies: ...

Laboratory three-point bending experiments are carried out to evaluate the effect of various fluids on the tensile strength of granite. The granite specimens were tested under both dry and saturated conditions. The fluids used to saturate the granite inclu ...

Injection of fluids in geo-reservoirs can reduce the effective stresses at depth, lubricating the nearby faults, promoting slip and, potentially, earthquakes. High-viscous fluids are often used during hydraulic fracturing and production phases in geo-reser ...

Binary fluids are present in a wide variety of systems at microscales, such as microfluidic devices containing drops, fluids with air bubbles trapped in them, and devices designed to mix fluids or to make two fluid substances react. Microfluidics devices a ...

We study the flow properties of red blood cells in confined channels, when the channel width is comparable to the cell size. We focus on the case of intermediate concentrations when hydrodynamic interactions between cells play a dominant role. This regime ...

High‐viscosity fluids are often used during hydraulic fracking operations in geo‐reservoirs. Here, we performed dedicated experiments to study the influence of fluid viscosity on fault reactivation and associated induced earthquakes. Experiments were condu ...

Fluids are pervasive in fault zones cutting the Earth's crust; however, the effect of fluid viscosity on fault mechanics is mainly conjectured by theoretical models. We present friction experiments performed on both dry and fluid-permeated silicate and car ...

In this work, we study the constitutive behavior of interacting colloidal suspensions for moderate and high concentrations. Specifically, using a lattice Boltzmann solver, we numerically examine suspensions flowing through narrow channels, and explore the ...

Continuous fiber thermoplastic composites are potential substitutes of steel in structural automotive components, since they combine fiber strength and rigidity with ductility, potential recyclability and low density of the thermoplastic (TP) matrix. Resin ...

We analyze the dynamic behavior of Newtonian fluids in elastic tubes subject to pulsatile pressure gradients and show that the interplay between the viscosity of the fluid, the elasticity of the wall, and the characteristic size of the confining media give ...

This thesis has been put in place during the development of an innovative medical device which consists in an intelligent footwear for foot plantar pressure redistribution in diabetic patients. In fact, despite the several sophisticated techniques develope ...

Locomotion is an essential feature for survival of many organisms, and it is also a technical requirement for untethered biomedical microdevices to operate inside the human body for targeted drug delivery and minimally invasive surgery. The overall goal of ...

The 1D modelling of cavitation vortex rope dynamics in Francis turbine draft tube is decisive for prediction of pressure fluctuations in the system. However, models are defined with parameters which values must be quantified either experimentally or numeri ...

Biological microorganisms swim with flagella and cilia that execute nonreciprocal motions for low Reynolds number (Re) propulsion in viscous fluids. This symmetry requirement is a consequence of Purcell's scallop theorem, which complicates the actuation sc ...

The objective of this thesis was to increase our understanding of two-phase geophysical flows (e.g. debris flows) by providing velocity profiles in idealized laboratory avalanches. To that end, we developed a new experimental platform made up of an incline ...

Rheological characteristics of linear copolymers of acrylamide (AM) and acryloyloxyethyltrimethyl ammonium chloride (Q9), differing in molar mass and chemical composition, have been studied in distilled water (DW) and industrial water (IW) obtained from a ...

Iodine added to iodide-based ionic liquids leads to extraordi- narily efficient charge transport, vastly exceeding that expect- ed for such viscous systems. Using terahertz time-domain spectroscopy, in conjunction with dc conductivity, diffusivity and visc ...

We investigated the feasibility of a concentric rotational microviscometer which is actuated remotely. This type of sensor might find application in vivo as a passive implant. The heart of the sensor is a cylindrical rotor, actuated from a distance of up t ...

A large series of ionic liqs. (ILs) based on the weakly coordinating alkoxyaluminate [Al(hfip)4]- (hfip: hexafluoroisopropoxy) with classical as well as functionalized cations were prepd., and their principal phys. properties detd. M.ps. are between 0 ([C4 ...

Bitumen is a complex viscoelastic material used as a binder in applications ranging from road paving to waterproof membranes for roofing [1]. In such applications, bitumen is often blended with a polymer in order to improve its elasticity. The resulting po ...
