In the attempt to reduce fuel consumption, a new generation of Ultra-High-By-Pass-Ratio (UHBR) turbofans have been introduced in the aeronautic industry which are structurally noisier especially at lower frequencies, because of their larger diameter, lower ...

We study the drainage of a viscous liquid film coating the outside of a solid horizontal cylinder, where gravity acts vertically. We focus on the limit of large Ohnesorge numbers Oh, where inertia is negligible compared to viscous effects. We first study t ...

Correct prediction of particle transport by surface waves is crucial in many practical applications such as search and rescue or salvage operations and pollution tracking and clean-up efforts. Recent results by Deike et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 829, 2017, ...

We introduce a reconfigurable medium for the manipulation of elastic propagation properties of Lamb waves. It is based on a shape memory polymer (SMP) with temperature-dependent Young's modulus. Waves are excited by a laser pulse and detected by a laser vi ...

Low wind speeds (< 4 m/s) are ubiquitous in many water bodies, yet the physical processes occurring at the air-water interface in this range are poorly understood. A notable example is smooth patches on the water surface, known as natural slicks, formed wh ...

This thesis is dedicated to the analysis of a subclass of interfacial flows, columnlike free-interface flows, from two view angles: (i) the symmetry breaking under geometry-induced or external forces, (ii) their stability against infinitesimal disturbances ...

A first-principles scaling law, based on turbulent transport considerations, and a multimachine database of density limit discharges from the ASDEX Upgrade, JET, and TCV tokamaks, show that the increase of the boundary turbulent transport with the plasma c ...

Sandy beaches in estuaries and bays (BEBs) are common landforms on the coasts of many major cities. They exist under a wide range of settings and their morphology is controlled by their distance from the estuary/bay entrance, exposure to different types of ...

We present in this paper an extension of the guided-wave M-component model of Rakov et al. considering the presence of a vertically elevated strike object. The tall object is represented as a lossless, uniform transmission line. Expressions for the current ...

A four-month glider mission was analyzed to assess turbulent dissipation in an anticyclonic eddy at the western boundary of the subtropical North Atlantic. The eddy (radius ≈ 60 km) had a core of low potential vorticity between 100–450 m, with maximum radi ...

When colossal gravity-driven mass flows enter a body of water, they may generate waves which can have destructive consequences on coastal areas. A number of empirical equations in the form of power functions of several dimensionless groups have been develo ...

Landslide-generated waves, also called impulse waves, occur as a result of the intrusion of landslides (such as rock falls, debris flows, and avalanches) into bodies of water (such as lakes, reservoirs, and seas). The objective of this thesis was to study ...

In order to identify or shed light on dominant long-term processes of the deep hypolimnion of Lake Geneva (309 m depth), time series of temperature and horizontal currents and profiles of temperature and oxygen, taken for over a decade in the deepest part ...

Simultaneous measurements of current and multiple‐station electric fields associated with a 5.4‐kA‐peak M‐component in rocket‐triggered lightning are presented in this study. A close‐range electric field measurement site was located northeast of the trigge ...

Jet injection devices have been studied and developed for transdermal drug delivery to avoid the use of needles. Due to bulky actuation mechanisms, they are limited to body areas that are easy to reach such as skin. Here, we demonstrate a thin and long liq ...

Tsunami, impulse-waves and dam-break waves afflict humanity with casualties and damages. An insight into the flow mechanisms of these waves is important to provide safety and reduce reconstruction costs. This experimental study focuses on the effect of bed ...

Experimental studies of impulse-wave formation have mostly used rigid blocks or granular materials to mimic landslides at the laboratory scale. These studies have deduced that material deformability plays a key part in wave formation: the more rigid the sl ...

The present paper focuses on the simulation of the high-velocity impact of a projectile impacting on a water-jet, causing the onset, development and collapse of cavitation. The simulation of the fluid motion is carried out using an explicit, compressible, ...

In the present work, an analytical solution is presented for the scattering of transverse surface waves by a homogeneous piezoelectric fiber contained in a functionally graded piezoelectric half-space with exponential variation. The boundary value problem ...

Tsunamis, impulse waves, and dam failures are disasters that challenge humanity, often leading to massive casualties and extreme economic losses. The highly unsteady flow conditions generated by such events are often in the form of turbulent bores. The pur ...
