Several boreholes were drilled for site comparison of a deep geological repository (DGR) in Northern Switzerland. The main target of the exploration program was the >100m thick Opalinus Clay, the designated host rock encountered at approximately 450 to 100 ...

Being able to work effectively in a team is a vital professional skill but how do students in different disciplines, engineering and hospitality, display their emotions when working together? We investigated their self-reported use of emotional labour stra ...

Introduction. - Lumbar disc herniation is most common degenerative alteration of the spine. Whenever surgical therapy proves to be necessary, recurrent disc herniation is most frequent concern. Here, primary aim was to determine the percentage of patients ...

Hybrid composites become popular and are today used in a large number of contemporary structural applications. When compared to non-hybrid composites, hybridization offers additional benefits since the mixing of cheaper, low-quality fibers, with more expen ...

We analyze about 200 naturally occurring networks with distinct dynamical origins to formally test whether the commonly assumed hypothesis of an underlying scale-free structure is generally viable. This has recently been questioned on the basis of statisti ...

Numerical models that can simulate coupled geometric instabilities in steel beam-columns are required for the seismic assessment of certain steel moment-resisting frames. Reliably simulating coupled instabilities requires that the steel material is precise ...

Introduction Pituitary adenomas (PA) are common intracranial tumors. In the context of the aging of the population, the question is whether postsurgical outcomes are comparable to the younger ones. The primary objective of the present study was to review p ...

An increasing number of studies are using landscape genomics to investigate local adaptation in wild and domestic populations. The implementation of this approach requires the sampling phase to consider the complexity of environmental settings and the burd ...

Atomic force microscopy (AFM) investigations of living cells provide new information in both biology and medicine. However, slow cell dynamics and the need for statistically significant sample sizes mean that data collection can be an extremely lengthy pro ...

With the advent of material science, high-performance steel materials have been developed for seismic applications that potentially reduce the earthquake-induced collapse risk of steel frame buildings. The High Yield Point (HYP400) steel is one of those ma ...

Developments in data assimilation theory allow to adjust integral parameters and cross sections with stochastic sampling. This work investigates how two stochastic methods, MOCABA and BMC, perform relative to a sensitivity-based methodology called GLLS. St ...

A critical aspect in the design of tubular bridges is the fatigue performance of the structural joints. Economic viability depends on it. Lower fatigue strength for joints with thicker failing members was observed in welded joints typical to the bridge app ...

A probabilistic method for the strength prediction of adhesively bonded double lap joints composed of pultruded GFRP adherends subjected to quasi-static axial tensile loading is presented. The prediction method is based on the experimentally determined mat ...

The effects of stress-induced lattice distortions (strain) on the conductivity of Y-doped BaZrO3, a high-temperature proton conductor with key technological applications for sustainable electrochemical energy conversion, are studied. Highly ordered epitaxi ...

For several decades friction welding technology has found broad application in many fields of the metal and plastic connection industry. The fabricated joints are laminar or punctiform depending upon the shape of the parts to be welded. The work presented ...

Objectives: The frontal hemispheric asymmetry and error-related components, as measured by EEG, are often considered to be biological correlates or “indicators of risk” for psychopathology. Here, we performed a meta-analysis to define specific patterns of ...

There is a growing interest in social and urban computing to employ crowdsourcing as means to gather impressions of urban perception for indoor and outdoor environments. Previous studies have established that reliable estimates of urban perception can be o ...

The characterization of the distribution of mutational effects is a key goal in evolutionary biology. Recently developed deep-sequencing approaches allow for accurate and simultaneous estimation of the fitness effects of hundreds of engineered mutations by ...

In regions with low to moderate seismicity, unreinforced masonry (URM) is commonly used for the construction of low to mid-rise buildings. When these structures are subjected to seismic loading, the stiff URM walls attract considerable part of the lateral ...
