Neuroprostheses have been used clinically for decades, to help restore or preserve brain functions, when pharmaceutical treatments are inefficient. Although great progress in the field has been made over the years to interface with the nervous system, surf ...

This thesis presents an extensive exploration of neuroelectronic interfaces, focusing on microfabrication, in silico modeling, and their applications in designing and fabricating devices for neural interfacing. The research encompasses both peripheral nerv ...

Implanted brain electrodes provide a unique way of electrically interfacing with individual neurons in vivo. However, chronic recording or stimulating capabilities of neural implants are often impaired by a strong immune response resulting in a fibrous sca ...

Over the last decades, implantable neural interfaces have been extensively explored and effectively deployed to address neurological and mental health disorders. The existing solutions present several limitations. Firstly, the physical size of the implanta ...

The present invention relates to a combined neuromodulation and/or neurostimulation system (10) for mitigating locomotor deficits of/or neuronal disorders, especially Parkinson's disease, said system (10) comprising: - at least one Deep Brain Stimulation ( ...

Objective. Peripheral nerve interfaces have the potential to restore sensory, motor, and visceral functions. In particular, intraneural interfaces allow targeting deep neural structures with high selectivity, even if their performance strongly depends upon ...

BACKGROUND: Stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) is one of the main treatment options in the management of small to medium size vestibular schwannomas (VSs), because of high tumor control rate and low cranial nerves morbidity. Series reporting long-term hearing ...

Recently, flexible and soft bioelectronic interfaces have been proposed as a solution to improve existing neural interfaces that currently present mechanical mismatch with the soft tissue. These are devices fabricated with thin polymeric or elastomeric bac ...

The auditory brainstem implant (ABI) is an auditory neuroprosthesis that provides hearing to deaf patients by electrically stimulating the cochlear nucleus (CN) of the brainstem. Whether such stimulation activates one or the other of the CN's two major sub ...

Technological progress in materials science and microengineering along with new discoveries in neuroscience have contributed to restore lost or impaired sensory functions by closely interfacing with the nervous system. Electronic devices have begun to be i ...

In the last decades, clinical neuroscience found a novel ally in neurotechnologies, devices able to record and stimulate electrical activity in the nervous system. These technologies improved the ability to diagnose and treat neural disorders. Neurotechnol ...

Transient electronics enabling devices to safely disappear in the environment can be applied not only in green electronics, but also in bioelectronic medicine. Neural implants able to degrade harmlessly inside the body eliminate the need for removal surger ...

A remote microphone (RM) system can be used in combination with wearable binaural communication devices, such as hearing aids (HAs), to improve speech intelligibility. Typically, a speaker is equipped with a body-worn microphone which enables to pick up th ...

The wireless power transfer (WPT) efficiency to implanted bioelectronic devices is constrained by several frequency-dependent physical mechanisms. Recent works have developed several mathematical formulations to understand these mechanisms and predict the ...

Non-Syndromic Hereditary Hearing Loss (NSHHL) is a genetically heterogeneous sensory disorder with about 120 genes already associated. Through exome sequencing (ES) and data aggregation, we identified a family with six affected individuals and one unrelate ...

Vestibular schwannomas (VS) are slow-growing intracranial extraaxial benign tumors, developing from the vestibular part of the eight cranial nerves. Stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) has now a long-term scientific track record as first intention treatment fo ...

Over the last 20 years, the field of Smart Dust has been proposed and demonstrated. Almost in the same period, implantable and wearable sensors for human monitoring have been actually successfully introduced in the market. The present research about Smart ...

Neurological disorders such as spinal cord lesion and stroke disturb sensorimotor pathways and result in severe motor deficits that can dreadfully impact the quality of life of affected individuals. Strategies aiming at restoring hand function after upper- ...

Objective:The cochlear nucleus (CN) is the target of the auditory brainstem implant (ABI). Most ABI candidates have Neurofibromatosis Type 2 (NF2) and distorted brainstem anatomy from bilateral vestibular schwannomas. The CN is difficult to characterize as ...

Viral delivery of exogenous coding sequences into the inner ear has the potential for therapeutic benefit for patients suffering genetic or acquired hearing loss. To devise improved strategies for viral delivery, we investigated two injection techniques, r ...
