Background: Although digital mobility outcomes (DMOs) can be readily calculated from real-world data collected with wearable devices and ad-hoc algorithms, technical validation is still required. The aim of this paper is to comparatively assess and validat ...

Vital sign detection is used across ubiquitous scenarios in medical and health settings, and contact and wearable sensors have been widely deployed. However, they are unsuitable for patients with burn wounds or infants with insufficient areas for attachmen ...

Event-based sensors have the potential to optimize energy consumption at every stage in the signal processing pipeline, including data acquisition, transmission, processing, and storage. However, almost all state-of-the-art systems are still built upon th ...

Today, wearable heart rate monitors are an integral part of runners' training sessions, with heart rate data routinely used to assess effort intensity and stress on the body. As athletes translate their physical capacity into performance on the field throu ...

While the task of automatically detecting eating events has been examined in prior work using various wearable devices, the use of smartphones as standalone devices to infer eating events remains an open issue. This paper proposes a framework that infers e ...

Presented herein are systems and methods for measuring sweat rate of a subject using a wearable system. A sweat rate may be determined automatically based on one or more signals produced by a wetting sensor module in response to a presence of sweat in the ...

In recent years, population aging and the consequent higher incidence of noncommunicable diseases, have increased the need for long-term health monitoring. Moreover, as healthcare cost is projected to grow substantially by 2030 in OECD countries, the deman ...

The research on ion-measuring devices has seen a rapid expansion in the last years as a consequence of the growing interest in wearable sensors for biofluids analysis and in portable devices for remote or in-line water and food quality monitoring. As a res ...

Walking speed (WS) is recognized as an important dimension of functional health and a candidate endpoint for clinical trials. To be adopted as a powerful outcome measure in clinical assessment, WS should be estimated pervasively and accurately in the real- ...

Power-Force-Velocity profile obtained during a sprint test is crucial for designing personalized training and evaluating injury risks. Estimation of instantaneous velocity is requisite for developing these profiles and the predominant method for this estim ...

Like 17 million people worldwide, an individual with cerebral palsy (CP) does not have the opportunity to walk harmoniously in society due to long-life impairments in movement and posture. The natural course of CP can be modulated by treatments and therapi ...

Following the cultural revolution of the late 1960s, the number of elite and recreational runners rose consistently, reaching approximately 7.9 million road races participants in 2018. Today, running is everywhere. City parks, forests, mountain trails, and ...

In recent years, sweat has gained increasing attention from the scientific community as a new analyte for health monitoring. The main advantage with respect to the "Gold Standard" for laboratory analysis, i.e. blood, is of course the possibility of perform ...

In the context of wearable medical systems, resources are scarce while performance requirements are high. Traditional sampling strategies create large amounts of data, which hinders the device's battery lifetime. However, energy savings are possible when r ...

Stress can impact many aspects of our lives, such as the way we interact and work with others, or the first impressions that we make. In the past, stress has most commonly been assessed through selfreported questionnaires; however, advancements in wearable ...

Daily activity reflects the health status of an individual. Ageing and disease drastically affect all dimensions of mobility, from the number of active bouts to their duration and intensity. Performing less activity leads to muscle deterioration and furthe ...

Quantifying daily physical activity in older adults can provide relevant monitoring and diagnostic information about risk of fall and frailty. In this study, we introduce instrumented shoes capable of recording movement and foot loading data unobtrusively ...

Activity level and gait parameters during daily life are important indicators for clinicians because they can provide critical insights into modifications of mobility and function over time. Wearable activity monitoring has been gaining momentum in daily l ...

Assessment of locomotion through simple tests such as timed up and go (TUG) or walking trials can provide valuable information for the evaluation of treatment and the early diagnosis of people with Parkinson's disease (PD). Common methods used in clinics a ...

We investigate the problem of online detection of complex activities (such as cooking, lunch, work at desk), i.e., recognizing them while the activities are being performed using parts of the sensor data. In contrast to prior work, where complex activity r ...
