Overhauser-effect dynamic nuclear polarization (OE-DNP) is an emerging method for enhancing the sensitivity of high-resolution nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) in liquids. OE-DNP generates nuclear spin hyperpolarization by electron-to-nuclear cross-relaxation between the analyte and a paramagnetic polarizing agent doped into the NMR solution. The key advantage of this method is the in situ enhancement of nuclear polarization under steady-state, which is inherently compatible with multiscan signal averaging

At the microscopic level, the behaviour of a solid is governed by the intricate interplay between electrons, the lattice, and, in some cases, spin degrees of freedom. From these interactions emerge collective excitations involving charge, lattice, and spin dynamics, known respectively as plasmons, phonons, and magnons. These quasiparticles and their mutual couplings can only be described within a quantum mechanical framework, from which arise a variety of exotic phases of matter. Light-matter interaction of

Recent progress in ultrafast x-ray sources helped establish x-rays as an important tool for probing lattice and magnetic dynamics initiated by femtosecond optical pulses. Here, we explore the potential of ultrashort hard x-ray pulses for driving magnetic dynamics. We use a transient grating technique in which a spatially periodic x-ray excitation pattern gives rise to material excitations at a well-defined wave vector, whose dynamics are monitored via diffraction of an optical probe pulse. The excitation of

Electron magnetic circular dichroism (EMCD) in transmission electron microscopy (TEM) enables element-specific measurement of spin and orbital magnetic moments, analogous to x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD). While the EMCD technique offers unmatched spatial resolution, its quantitative accuracy remains under scrutiny, particularly in beam-splitter geometries with convergent probes. Here, we systematically evaluate the limits of quantitative EMCD analysis using the first-order magnetostructural trans

We report microwave spectroscopy of 167Er3+ doped in CaWO4, which reveals the hyperfine splitting of the erbium electronic ground state (Z1, Jeff = 15/2) induced by the I = 7/2 nuclear spin. From spectra measured below similar to 50 mK in magnetic fields up to 200 mT, we extract spin-Hamiltonian parameters including the electron g, hyperfine A, and nuclear electric quadrupolar Q tensors. Crucially, our analysis demonstrates unambiguously that the previously unobserved nuclear electric quadrupolar moment is

A central challenge in water electrolysis lies with the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) where the formation of molecular oxygen (O₂) is hindered by the constraint of angular momentum conservation. While the reactants OH⁻ or H₂O are diamagnetic, the O₂ product has a paramagnetic triplet ground state, requiring a change in spin configuration when being formed. This constraint has prompted interest in spin‐selective catalysts as a means to facilitate OER. In this context, the roles of magnetism and chirality‐i

Context. The magnetic field has been shown to play a crucial role in star formation. Dust polarization is one of the most effective tools for probing the properties of the magnetic field, yet it does not directly trace its strength. To bridge this gap, several methods have been developed, combining polarization and spectroscopic data, to estimate the strength of the magnetic field. The most widely applied method was developed by Davis (1951, Phys. Rev., 81, 890) and Chandrasekhar & Fermi (1953, ApJ, 118, 11

We review the current hopes for applications of exciton-polaritons in semiconductor microcavities. These quasi-particles have become distinguished in recent years for a variety of different effects including Bose-Einstein condensation, ballistic spin current propagation and polarisation sensitive bistability. Bose-Einstein condensation is related to ultra low-threshold lasing, which has been demonstrated at room temperature and currently captures a significant research effort towards electrical carrier inje

Coherent manipulation of spin ensembles is a key issue in the development of spintronics. In particular, multivalued spin switching may lead to new schemes of logic gating and memories. This phenomenon has been studied with atom vapours 30 years ago, but is still awaited in the solid state. Here, we demonstrate spin multistability with microcavity polaritons in a trap. Owing to the spinor nature of these light-matter quasiparticles and to the anisotropy of their interactions, we can optically control the sp

We have measured the resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) spectra at the Cu L-3 edge in a variety of cuprates. Exploiting a considerably improved energy resolution (0.8 eV) we recorded significant dependencies on the sample composition and orientation, on the scattering geometry, and on the incident photon polarization. The RIXS final states correspond to two families of electronic excitations, having local (dd excitations) and nonlocal (charge-transfer) character. The dd energy splitting can be estim

The magnetic excitation spectrum in the two-dimensional (2D) S = 1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet copper deuteroformate tetradeuterate has been measured for temperatures up to T similar to J/2, where J = 6.31 +/- 0.02 meV is the 2D exchange coupling. For T < J, a dispersion of the zone boundary energy is observed, which is attributed to a wave vector dependent quantum renormalization. At higher temperatures, spin-wavelike excitations persist, but are found to broaden and soften. By combining our data with nu

The domain nucleation and growth during polarization switching in Pb(Zr,Ti)O-3 (PZT) ferroelectric thin film capacitors with Pt top (TE) and bottom electrodes (BE) were studied by means of atomic force microscopy (AFM). The experimental configuration used in this study differs from that conventionally used (AFM tip/PZT/BE) where the AFM tip acts as a positionable TE. A small ac voltage was applied between the electrodes with a step by step increasing dc bias voltage. The induced piezoelectric vibration was

The interface between solid surfaces and cavities filled with gaseous 131Xe can be probed by multiple-quantum filtered NMR. Physisorbed 131Xe is usually not directly observable by NMR spectroscopy, but information can be transferred into the gas phase through desorption. The exchange process may lead to higher-rank order of the nuclear spins in gaseous Xe which can be detected by multiple-quantum filtered NMR. [on SciFinder (R)]

Two novel schemes are described for cross polarization in NMR that make it possible to achieve an efficient transfer of polarization from abundant I spins to dil. S spins under high-speed magic angle spinning spectroscopy, which is useful for systems with large chem. shift anisotropies at high fields. The frequency of one of the RF carriers is modulated sinusoidally during spin-locking while the RF amplitude is kept const. It is shown by expt. that frequency modulation greatly attenuates the crit. character

Rhombohedral Pb(Zr0.70Ti0.30)O-3 thin films of four different well-defined textures, namely, (100), (111), bimodal (110)/(111), and (100)/(111), were prepared by a sol-gel method. The films were characterized in terms of grain size, presence of second phases, surface roughness, columnarity of grains, and other microstructural features. The dielectric, ferroelectric, and fatigue properties were investigated, with emphasis on the hysteresis switching characteristics. Results are discussed from the reference p

In systems with dipolar relaxation in isotropic phase, it is possible to measure the extent of cross correlation of the fluctuations of two selected dipole-dipole interactions A-M and A-X by selectively exciting and spin-locking the transverse magnetization of spin A. If the system comprises only three spins A, M, and X, the conversion of in-phase magnetization IxA into doubly antiphase magnetization 4IxAIzMIzX during the spin-locking period occurs spontaneously through relaxation. The rate of this conversi

The heteronuclear cross-polarization efficiency in the rotating frame can be improved by sweeping the radiofrequency amplitude adiabatically through the Hartmann-Hahn condition. The enhancement is particularly significant for strongly coupled IS spin systems with weak dipolar coupling to extraneous spins. A good approxn. to an adiabatic transfer is obtained with a tangential time dependence of the radiofrequency field amplitude whereby transient oscillations are efficiently suppressed. A soln. is presented to the problem of phase dispersion in the resultant magnetization for pulses used for high-resoln. NMR work by demonstrating how a Gaussian pulse having an on-resonance flip angle of 270 Deg has much improved phase properties over the conventional 90 Deg Gaussian pulse. Since the whole pulse is soft, the coupling partners of a multiplet are not affected, and the evolution of the magnetization due to couplings will be refocused in exactly the same way as if it were due to chem. shifts. A

The measurement of the migration of longitudinal 2-spin order by 2-dimensional (2D) exchange spectroscopy or by selective 1-dimensional (1D) methods (2D or 1D zz-exchange spectroscopy) allows unambiguous differentiation between chem. exchange and cross-relaxation processes in complex nuclear spin systems, provided a fragment with at least 2 coupled spins is transferred from 1 site to another in the exchange process. Compared to conventional 2D exchange spectroscopy, zz-exchange studies have the advantage th
