Riveted railway bridges are commonly considered as being “old”, having fatigue damage and are therefore replaced. While this practice should be by now obsolete by using novel engineering methods like structural monitoring, prolongation of the service durat ...

We review the AIM 2020 challenge on virtual image relighting and illumination estimation. This paper presents the novel VIDIT dataset used in the challenge and the different proposed solutions and final evaluation results over the 3 challenge tracks. The f ...

This paper presents results on the impact of different tracks on the economic viability of track electrification for regional railway. Since regional railway still heavily relies on pollutive diesel propulsion systems, track electrification can be key to r ...

In light of the environmental consequences of linear production and consumption processes, the circular economy (CE) is gaining momentum as a concept and practice, promoting closed material cycles by focusing on multiple strategies from material recycling ...

Due to the accumulation of traffic, the railway components are affected by the induced stresses. As a result, the geometry of the railways is degraded over time. The degradation occurs either through the partial loss of the track's geometry or through the ...

The transport of ballast caused by the overflowing of longitudinal drains is a prime example of the interactions between the railway track and its environment. In such conditions, water flowing from the platform, along with debris, may drag the ballast off ...

Harvesting the numerous small scale hydroelectric potential is a way to increase the sustainable hydraulic energy production in developed countries. The condition to meet economical profitability with pico power stations - below 25 kW - is to minimize the ...

This paper aims to start an analytical study of the computational complexity of some online We analyze the following problem. Consider a train station consisting of a set of parallel tracks. Each track can be approached from one side only or from both side ...

Today, energy saving is one of the main objectives for engineers. In the case of mobile applications, energy can be saved by two different ways: decreasing the total masse of the system and increasing the efficiency of the overall system. This paper presen ...

We present a new class of continuously defined parametric snakes using a special kind of exponential splines as basis functions. We have enforced our bases to have the shortest possible support subject to some design constraints to maximize efficiency. Whi ...

Today, energy saving is one of the main objectives for engineers. In the case of mobile applications, energy can be saved by two different ways. First, decreasing the total masse of the system, and second, increasing the efficiency of the overall system. T ...

The geometry of the railway track is degraded under traffic load, and must be maintained periodically. This degradation is due to the arrangement of ballast particles under loads and vibrations, which results into irreversible plastic settlements. Tamping ...

Network industries, such as electricity, railways and air transport, are very complex technical, economic, and political systems in which the interplay of technology and institutions has a significant impact on performance. While the performance of the net ...

Approximately 25 percent of the budget for the maintenance and renewal of railway tracks –in Switzerland more than a billion Swiss Francs– is used for the switches (points) and crossings (S&C). While in the mean time the budget expenditure for the maintena ...

Approximately 25 percent of the budget for the maintenance and renewal of railway tracks is used for the switches (points) and crossings (S&C). While in the mean time the budget expenditure for the maintenance and renewal of plain track is optimized with e ...

The aim of this thesis is to provide rational engineering methods for the fatigue safety examination of existing railway bridges. Increasing railway traffic loading and enhanced structural analysis allow for higher exploitation of the capacity of bridge el ...

So-called “non-load bearing” parts of (railway) bridges increase the stiffness and decrease the stresses in short span bridge structures. The rail track, consisting of ballast, sleepers and rails, has a non-linear behaviour and its rigidity depends on the ...

The asymmetrical multilevel inverters allow to obtain a high resolution together with a good efficiency thanks to the switch hybridization. Nevertheless, the supplies of the cells must be insulated one from each other, which increases the converter complex ...

The investigated asymmetrical multilevel inverters consist of series-connected inverter cells with different characteristics. They allow to obtain a very good output-voltage resolution. The feeding of the cells is a delicate point which can increase the in ...
