Driftwood belongs to riverine ecosystems and is stored and transported in every natural stream. Hydraulic structures built in streams typically alter the flow characteristics and might consequently get in conflict with driftwood. The latter can get trapped ...

In-stream open check dams are essential for flood protection at mountain rivers that are characterized by steep slopes (>1%) and sediment-laden flood discharges. These structures comprise an opening acting as a lateral or vertical flow contraction to force ...

In the spring of 1818, ice avalanches from the Gietro Glacier created an ice dam, which in turn formed a glacial lake in the Drance Valley (Canton of Valais, Switzerland). Today, its maximum volume is estimated to have been 25x10(6) m(3). Cantonal authorit ...

Electricity generation, water supply, flood protection, flow regulation and navigation are amongst the main services provided by reservoirs. Sedimentation affects the sustainability of reservoirs, by reducing their storage capacity, and increases the negat ...

Dams store water and trap sediment in their reservoirs. Downstream river segments, hence, are affected by a limited sediment dynamics. This becomes obvious by river bed incision, limited geomorphological variability and depletion of hydraulic habitats for ...

Sediment traps with partially open check dams are crucial elements for flood protection in alpine regions. The trapping of sediment is necessary when intense sediment transport occurs during floods that may endanger urban areas at downstream river reaches. ...

Dam safety is strongly linked to the probability of occurrence of large floods. Floods can transport large wood (LW) into reservoirs and towards water release structures as spillways. Due to blocking and clogging, LW may significantly influence the dischar ...

The appropriate design of a river diversion system during construction of dam is an essential task since dramatic consequences in view of cost and time overrun may be involved. After a short outline of the different methods of river diversion and its main ...

Sediment traps are used for the protection of urban settlements at rivers in mountainous regions. These structures aim at the retention of sediment in the case of hazardous floods, but existing sediment traps tend to retain sediment also when the discharge ...

The mouth of the Baye de Clarens torrent in Switzerland is currently constrained by lateral training walls, sequent sills and a bridge with a low hydraulic capacity. Due to a bed load trap upstream, few sediments reach the mouth. To improve flood protectio ...

Open check dams are built to retain bed load in case of major floods and may have filtering, sieving as well as dosing effects on sediment transport. The combination of an upstream reservoir with an open check dam is designated as bed load trap. These stru ...

The simulation of runoff in Alpine catchment areas is essential for the optimal operation of high-head storage hydropower plants (HPP) under normal flow conditions, but also in case of flood events. A semi-distributed conceptual numerical approach has been ...

During the last decades, the Upper Rhone River basin has been hit by several flood events causing significant damages in excess of 500 million Swiss Francs. From this situation, the 3rd Rhône river training project was planned in order to improve the flood ...

In alpine regions of Europe, river training works were typically the reason for the transformation of wide and braided rivers into linear river systems with a lack of structural diversity, i.e. gravel banks, islands, woody debris, riffles or pools. These i ...

La réhabilitation des barrages existants impose généralement une augmentation de leur capacité d’évacuation en crue. Dans de nombreuses situations, le PK-Weir (Piano Key Weir) offre à cet égard une solution compacte et efficace. La conception et la réalisa ...

Uncontrolled overtopping during flood events can endanger embankment dams. Erosion of the downstream slope and scouring of its toe due to the high energy of the overflow can lead to breach formation and complete failure. Solution to overcome these dangerou ...

The Saint-Marc dam, owned by EDF-France is a concrete gravity dam built between 1926 and 1930. It is located near Limoges (France) on the Taurion River and has currently two gated spillways, one 7.50 m wide on the right bank and the other with two passes o ...

Side weirs, also known as a lateral weirs, and overflow dams are free overflow regulation and diversion devices commonly encountered in hydraulic engineering. They are set into the side of a channel or river allowing to spill a part of the discharge over t ...
