The need of full transposition of the current carrying elements (strands) in large cables is frequently retained as top design criterion for conductors operating in pulsed mode. However, when the transposition error, i.e., the inductance difference among t ...

In online single-sided partial discharge (PD) location, the measured PD reflection patterns are affected by the characteristics of all the components of the associated power network. This paper analyses the performance of a PD location method based on elec ...

Following the conceptual design, the engineering design of the dc magnet and cable-in-conduit conductor (CICC) for the Super-X test facility has been done in 2021. Totally three types of conductors with different structures were designed for the three pair ...

For the European DEMO fusion reactor, several options of the Toroidal Field (TF) coil design were proposed. The winding of the TF coil option 1 is based on React&Wind (RW), Nb3Sn, graded conductors in order to optimize the amount of superconductor accordin ...

High-temperature superconductors (HTSs) enable exclusive operating conditions for fusion magnets, boosting their performance up to 20 T generated magnetic fields in the temperature range from 4 K to 20 K. One of the main technological issues of HTS conduct ...

A hybrid design of the Central Solenoid is under study within the conceptual design phase of the European DEMO fusion reactor. It is based on HTS conductors in the innermost high-field layers, and Nb3Sn and NbTi conductors for field values below 15 T. Sinc ...

The aim of this thesis is to investigate the mechanical and thermal behaviour of HTS coated conductor cables for EUROfusion DEMO magnets. One of the issue in large HTS magnets is the safety against a quench. A quench is a sudden thermal runway in which the ...

The objective of this thesis is the development of high-field and high-current joints between Nb3Sn cables for superconducting coils. The main fields of application are high energy physics (HEP) and thermonuclear fusion. In this thesis, the focus is on Win ...

This manuscript reports on the application of copper thermal spraying in the manufacturing process of an electrical connection between Nb3Sn cables for superconducting magnets of fusion reactors. The joint is realized through diffusion bonding of the spray ...

While metasurfaces (MSs) are constructed from deeply subwavelength unit cells, they are generally electrically large and full-wave simulations of the complete structure are computationally expensive. Thus, to reduce this high computational cost, nonuniform ...

In this chapter, we discussed the TL theory and its application to the problem of lightning electromagnetic field coupling to transmission lines. After a short discussion on the underlying assumptions of the TL theory, we described seemingly different but ...

Local defects in the manufacturing of high temperature superconducting cable-in-conduit conductors are known to be present at different stages of the conductor production. The impact of such defects on the performance of one module of the hybrid option of ...

A major challenge to the scalability of cryogenic computing platforms is the heat load associated with the growing number of electrical cable connections between the superconducting circuitry and the room-temperature environment. Compared with electrical c ...

In the frame of the conceptual design studies for the Toroidal Field (TF) coils of DEMO, a solution based on a layer-wound magnet, rectangular-shaped Cable-in-Conduit conductors and W&R manufacturing approach, is being developed. The feasibility and perfor ...

In this work, we use finite elements simulations to study the far field properties of two plasmonic structures, namely a dipole antenna and a cylinder dimer, connected to a pair of nanorods. We show that electrical, rather than near field, coupling between ...

The impact of electromagnetic (EM) and thermal cyclic loading (referred as warm-up-cool-down-WUCD) on the Nb3Sn cable in conduit conductors for the toroidal field magnets of the ITER tokamak should be carefully assessed for the proper operation of the mach ...

A good knowledge of material properties is a critical aspect for modeling high-temperature superconductor (HTS) devices. However, the electrical resistivity of coated conductors above the critical current is limited. The major challenge in characterizing t ...

In-situ laser sintering can be used to locally sinter conductive inks in an uninterrupted process, enabling the embedding of printed electronics within 3D printed structures. In this work we apply a laser sintering method to create highly conductive silver ...

Quench protection is a critical issue for magnet using high-temperature superconducting (HTS) materials such as REBCO. For cable-in-conduit conductor (CICC) with twisted REBCO tapes, which is considered for high-current HTS conductor for fusion magnet, the ...

The EUROfusion DEMO is being designed as the fusion machine to be built after ITER. During the preconceptual phase, several design options are investigated by theoretical analyses as well as tests on newly developed conductor prototypes. One design option ...
