Gene regulatory networks (GRNs) play a crucial role in an organism's response to changing environmental conditions. Cellular behaviors typically result from the integration of multiple gene outputs, and their regulation often demands precise control of num ...

Nanometric scale size oscillations seem to be a fundamental feature of all living organisms on Earth. Their detection usually requires complex and very sensitive devices. However, some recent studies demonstrated that very simple optical microscopes and de ...

IntroductionPatients undergoing cancer treatment by radiation therapy commonly develop Candida albicans infections (candidiasis). Such infections are generally treated by antifungals that unfortunately also induce numerous secondary effects in the patient. ...

Capsules are often used to protect chemical and biological entities from the environment, to control the timing and location of their release, or to facilitate the collection of waste. Their performance depends on the thickness and composition of their she ...

The beginning of the 21st century was marked by the advent of disruptive technologies, which ushered an era of groundbreaking advances in fundamental sciences, carried by the great pace at which computational capabilities spread and evolved. But the new ce ...

Mitochondria require nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD(+)) to carry out the fundamental processes that fuel respiration and mediate cellular energy transduction. Mitochondrial NAD(+) transporters have been identified in yeast and plants(1,2), but thei ...

Living organisms can catalyze many thousands of biochemical reactions that they use to convert energy and matter, which provides them with the essentials for life. The sum of these chemical reactions happening in an organism is called metabo-lism. Understa ...

Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the etiological agent for the tuberculosis disease, is a bacterial pathogen thought to infect about a quarter of the global human population. It is the first cause of death among infectious diseases, and is most prevalent in low ...

Mycobacteria grow by inserting new cell wall material in discrete zones at the cell poles. This pattern implies that polar growth zones must be assembled de novo at each division, but the mechanisms that control the initiation of new pole growth are unknow ...

During cytokinesis in budding yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) damaged proteins are distributed asymmetrically between the daughter and the mother cell. Retention of damaged proteins is a crucial mechanism ensuring a healthy daughter cell with full replica ...

The core of this thesis is the application of different modalities of atomic force microscopy to study living systems. After a brief introduction, quantitative imaging state of the art is presented and the applications for mammalian, plant, bacterial, and ...

Whole-cell bacterial bioreporters are proposed asalternatives to chemical analysis of, for example, pol-lutants in environmental compartments. Commonlybased on reporter gene induction, bioreporters pro-duce a detectable signal within 30 min to a few hoursa ...

The main aim of this study was to assess conditions at which simple yeast-based model organism produces maximal levels of protoporphyrin IX (PpIX) after an exogenous administration of its precursor, 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA), and the ferrous-ion chelator ...

The availability of reproducible, convenient, and inexpensive model organisms able to generate predictable levels of endogenous porphyrins, including protoporphyrin IX (PpIX), is essential in photomedicine research. Saccharomyces cerevisiae produces endoge ...

In this work, the antimicrobial effects of the photo-Fenton process on yeast cells were tested (Saccharomyces cerevisiae), an essential eukaryotic unicellular model of living cells. Near-neutral pH was used in all studies, while iron sulfate and iron citra ...

AimsTo monitor the effect of a live yeast additive on feedstuff colonization by targeted fibrolytic micro-organisms and fibre degradation in the cow rumen. Methods and ResultsAbundance of adhering fibrolytic bacteria and fungi on feedstuffs incubated in sa ...

Essential in biomedical research is the necessity of gathering statistically relevant data about large populations of specific biological entities, e.g. organisms, cells or molecules, while preserving detailed information about each single entity under in ...

Parametric active contours are an attractive approach for image segmentation, thanks to their computational efficiency. They are driven by application-dependent energies that reflect the prior knowledge on the object to be segmented. We propose an energy i ...

Sequencing the genome of Candida albicans as it evolves in a patient reveals the genetic changes that allow the yeast to adapt to its environment. ...

We studied the flocculation mechanism at the molecular level by determining the atomic structures of N-Flo1p and N-Lg-Flo1p in complex with their ligands. We show that they have similar ligand binding mechanisms but distinct carbohydrate specificities and ...
