Advanced neural interfaces are transforming applications ranging from neuroscience research to diagnostic tools (for mental state recognition, tremor and seizure detection) as well as prosthetic devices (for motor and communication recovery). By integratin ...

Prism adaptation (PA) is a useful method to investigate short-term sensorimotor plasticity. Following active exposure to prisms, individuals show consistent after-effects, probing that they have adapted to the perturbation. Whether after-effects are transf ...

Previous research has suggested that bodily signals from internal organs are associated with diverse cortical and subcortical processes involved in sensory-motor functions, beyond homeostatic reflexes. For instance, a recent study demonstrated that the pre ...

Brain-Machine interfaces aim to create a direct neural link between user's brain and machines. This goal has pushed scientists to investigate a large spectrum of applications in the realm of assistive and rehabilitation technologies. However, despite great ...

There seems to be no common factor for visual perception, i.e., performance in visual tasks correlates only weakly with each other. Similar results were found with visual illusions. One may expect common visual factors for individuals suffering from pathol ...

Common factors are ubiquitous. First, we show that, however in vision, correlations of performance in similar paradigms are low even though test-retest reliability is high. Second, one might expect that correlations increase with increasing age because of ...

Impaired locomotion is a frequent and major source of disability in patients with neurological conditions. Different neuroimaging methods have been used to understand the brain substrates of locomotion in various neurological diseases (mainly in Parkinson' ...

Motor imagery (MI) allows one to mentally represent an action without necessarily performing it. Importantly, however, MI is profoundly influenced by the ability to actually execute actions, as demonstrated by the impairment of this ability as a consequenc ...

In cognition, audition, and somatosensation, performance strongly correlates between different paradigms, which suggests the existence of common factors. In contrast, visual performance in seemingly very similar tasks, such as visual and bisection acuity, ...

Cognitive neuroscience has increasingly focused on studying the subject, i.e. the self, of conscious experience. In order to be the subject of an experience, we generally experience owning a physical body, being located within that body, and being able to ...

Unlike in cognition, audition and somatosensation, performance between various visual tasks does not correlate. Surprisingly, even tasks that appear similar, like visual acuity and line bisection task do not share much common variance. Similar results were ...

Perceptual learning is learning to see. For example in a bisection task, three parallel lines are presented with the central line slightly offset towards the right or the left outer line. Participants indicate the offset direction. Training gradually impro ...

Objective. In this work we present—for the first time—the online operation of an electroencephalogram (EEG) brain–computer interface (BCI) system based on covert visuospatial attention (CVSA), without relying on any evoked responses. Electrophysiological c ...

Perceptual learning can occur when stimuli are only imagined, i.e., without proper stimulus presentation. For example, perceptual learning improved bisection discrimination when only the two outer lines of the bisection stimulus were presented and the cent ...

In this paper we present the results of six motor-disabled patients manoeuvring a telepresence robot via a BCI. Remarkably, although five of the patients had never visited the location where the telepresence robot was operating, they achieved similar perfo ...

The non-invasive Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) developed in our lab targets asynchronous operation of devices by monitoring electroencephalographic (EEG) activity and identifying oscillatory patterns that the user can voluntary modulate through the execut ...

Substantial data from the cognitive neurosciences point to the importance of bodily processing for the development of a comprehensive theory of the self. A key aspect of the bodily self is self-location, the experience that the self is localized at a speci ...

The processing of human bodies is important in social life and for the recognition of another person's actions, moods, and intentions. Recent neuroimaging studies on mental imagery of human body parts suggest that the left hemisphere is dominant in body pr ...

Human experience takes place in the line of mental time (MT) created through 'self-projection' of oneself to different time-points in the past or future. Here we manipulated self-projection in MT not only with respect to one's life events but also with res ...

The perspective from where the world is perceived is an important aspect of the bodily self and may break down in neurological conditions such as out-of-body experiences (OBEs). These striking disturbances are characterized by disembodiment, an external pe ...
