We consider on the torus the scaling limit of stochastic 2D (inviscid) fluid dynamics equations with transport noise to deterministic viscous equations. Quantitative estimates on the convergence rates are provided by combining analytic and probabilistic ar ...

We examine the connection of two graph parameters, the size of a minimum feedback arcs set and the acyclic disconnection. A feedback arc set of a directed graph is a subset of arcs such that after deletion the graph becomes acyclic. The acyclic disconnecti ...

Using a variational method, we prove the existence of heteroclinic solutions for a 6-dimensional system of ordinary differential equations. We derive this system from the classical Benard-Rayleigh problem near the convective instability threshold. The cons ...

A space-time adaptive algorithm is presented to solve the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. Time discretization is performed with the BDF2 method while continuous, piecewise linear anisotropic finite elements are used for the space discretization. Th ...

Rectified-linear-unit (ReLU) neural networks, which play a prominent role in deep learning, generate continuous and piecewise-linear (CPWL) functions. While they provide a powerful parametric representation, the mapping between the parameter and function s ...

Automatic verification of programs manipulating arrays relies on specialised decision procedures. A methodology to classify the theories handled by these procedures is introduced. It is based on decomposition theorems in the style of Feferman and Vaught. T ...

In a non-synchronous system with n processes, no t(0)-resilient (deterministic or probabilistic) Byzantine consensus protocol can prevent a disagreement among correct processes if the number of faulty processes is > n - 2t(0). Therefore, the community defi ...

Dynamic nuclear polarisation (DNP) of solids doped with high-spin metal ions, such as Gd3+, is a useful strategy to enhance the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) sensitivity for these samples. Spin diffusion can relay polarisation throughout a sample, which ...

The objective of this paper is to investigate a new numerical method for the approximation of the self-diffusion matrix of a tagged particle process defined on a grid. While standard numerical methods make use of long-time averages of empirical means of de ...

The standard way to do computations in Quantum Field Theory (QFT) often results in the requirement of dramatic cancellations between contributions induced by a "heavy" sector into the physical observables of the "light" (or low energy) sector - the phenome ...

Free radicals play a key role in the ageing process. However, free radicals are small, reactive and short lived and thus challenging to measure. We utilize a new technique called diamond magnetometry for this pur-pose. We make use of nitrogen vacancy cente ...

In recent years, considerable interest has been devoted to the interactions between cavitation bubbles and tissue-mimicking materials due to their promising applications in medicine and biomedical sciences. The strong fluid-structure interaction between a ...

In this Letter, we address the question of whether the conformal invariance can be considered as a global symmetry of a theory of fundamental interactions. To describe Nature, this theory must contain a mechanism of spontaneous breaking of the scale symmet ...

A search for new heavy resonances decaying to WW, WZ, ZZ, WH, or ZH boson pairs in the all-jets final state is presented. The analysis is based on proton-proton collision data recorded by the CMS detector in 2016-2018 at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV a ...

Diffusion is one of the most important phenomena studied in science ranging from physics to biology and, in abstract form, even in social sciences. In the field of materials science, diffusion in crystalline solids is of particular interest as it plays a p ...

Superconductor/metal interfaces are usually fabricated in heterostructures that join these dissimilar materials. A conceptually different approach has recently exploited the strain sensitivity of heavy-fermion superconductors, selectively transforming regi ...

Image noise can often be accurately fitted to a Poisson-Gaussian distribution. However, estimating the distribution parameters from a noisy image only is a challenging task. Here, we study the case when paired noisy and noise-free samples are accessible. N ...

Recent advances in computational neuroscience have demonstrated the usefulness and importance of stochastic, spatial reaction-diffusion simulations. However, ever increasing model complexity renders traditional serial solvers, as well as naive parallel imp ...

The diffusion limit of kinetic systems has been subject of numerous studies since prominent works of Lebowitz et al. [1] and van Kampen [2]. More recently, the topic has seen a fresh interest from the rarefied gas simulation perspective. In particular, Fok ...

We investigate experimentally and theoretically diffusiophoretic separation of negatively charged particles in a rectangular channel flow, driven by CO2 dissolution from one side-wall. Since the negatively charged particles create an exclusion zone near th ...
