Wave breaking is a complex physical process about which open questions remain. For some applications, it is critical to include breaking effects in phase-resolved envelope-based wave models such as the non-linear Schr & ouml;dinger. A promising approach is ...

Correct prediction of particle transport by surface waves is crucial in many practical applications such as search and rescue or salvage operations and pollution tracking and clean-up efforts. Recent results by Deike et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 829, 2017, ...

Weak solutions arise naturally in the study of the Navier-Stokes and Euler equations both from an abstract regularity/blow-up perspective and from physical theories of turbulence. This thesis studies the structure and size of singular set of such weak solu ...

We investigate the growth of a plane-strain/radial hydraulic fracture in an infinite impermeable medium driven by a constant injection rate assuming that the apparent toughness scales with the decreasing fracture growth rate in a power-law relation. The vi ...

In labscale Faraday experiments, meniscus waves respond harmonically to small-amplitude forcing without threshold, hence potentially cloaking the instability onset of parametric waves. Their suppression can be achieved by imposing a contact line pinned at ...

Sandy beaches in estuaries and bays (BEBs) are common landforms on the coasts of many major cities. They exist under a wide range of settings and their morphology is controlled by their distance from the estuary/bay entrance, exposure to different types of ...

We investigate the time evolution of the mean location and variance of a charged particle subject to random collisions that are Poisson distributed. The particle moves on a plane and is subject to a magnetic field applied perpendicular to the plane, so it ...

Landslide-generated waves, also called impulse waves, occur as a result of the intrusion of landslides (such as rock falls, debris flows, and avalanches) into bodies of water (such as lakes, reservoirs, and seas). The objective of this thesis was to study ...

Flows of gases and liquids interacting with solid objects are often turbulent within a thin boundary layer. As energy dissipation and momentum transfer are dominated by the boundary layer dynamics, many engineering applications can benefit from an improved ...

Developing successful tokamak operation scenarios, as well as confident extrapolation of present-day knowledge requires a rigorous understanding of plasma turbulence, which largely determines the quality of the confinement. In particular, accurate particle ...

Offshore lighthouses are a remarkable historical heritage often over 100 years old. The management of their ageing is a challenge and requires a thorough understanding of their structural response under wave loading. With this aim in view, the dynamic resp ...

In ASDEX Upgrade, the propagation of cold pulses induced by type-I edge localized modes (ELMs) is studied using electron cyclotron emission measurements, in a dataset of plasmas with moderate triangularity. It is found that the edge safety factor or the pl ...

We study the stability of special, stratified solutions of a 3D Boussinesq system describing an incompressible, inviscid 3D fluid with variable density (or temperature, depending on the context) under the effect of a uni-directional gravitational force. Th ...

Transitional turbulence in shear flows is supported by a network of unstable exact invariant solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations. The network is interconnected by heteroclinic connections along which the turbulent trajectories evolve between invariant ...

Tsunamis, impulse waves, and dam failures are disasters that challenge humanity, often leading to massive casualties and extreme economic losses. The highly unsteady flow conditions generated by such events are often in the form of turbulent bores. The pur ...

We report an experimental investigation of a falling water film sheared by a turbulent counter-current air flow in an inclined rectangular channel. Film thickness and wave velocity measurements associated with visual observation are conducted to study the ...

Modeling wave propagation in highly heterogeneous media is of prime importance in engineering applications of diverse nature such as seismic inversion, medical imaging or the design of composite materials. The numerical approximation of such multiscale phy ...

We consider the initial value problem for the inviscid Primitive and Boussinesq equations in three spatial dimensions. We recast both systems as an abstract Eulertype system and apply the methods of convex integration of De Lellis and Székelyhidi to show t ...

In this work, we focus on the Dynamical Low Rank (DLR) approximation of PDEs equations with random parameters. This can be interpreted as a reduced basis method, where the approximate solution is expanded in separable form over a set of few deterministic b ...

The major objective of this study was to develop further understanding of 3D nearshore hydrodynamics under a variety of wave and tidal forcing conditions. The main tool used was a comprehensive 3D numerical model – combining the flow module of Delft3D with ...
