Academic Cooperation to Foster Research and Advocacy Competences in the Occupied Palestinian Territory (West Bank)

Résumé

Palestinians living in the West Bank, a territory occupied by the State of Israel according to International Law, face deprived access to land and a limited ability to move freely which pertains to the presence of Israeli settlements and other infrastructure (closures, restricted or forbidden roads, etc.) This confinement has significant impacts on their economic and social livehoods, and it is even worsenig with the on-going construction of a 709 km long Barrier which mainly runs inside the West Bank. With regard to this situation, there is a clear need to strenghten the capacity of civil society and its representatives to apply sound research progress as a basis for improved advocacy for Palestinian human rights.

Israeli-occupied territories

Israeli-occupied territories are the lands that were captured and occupied by Israel during the Six-Day War of 1967. While the term is currently applied to the Palestinian territories and the Golan Heights, it has also been used to refer to areas that were formerly occupied by Israel, namely the Sinai Peninsula and southern Lebanon. Prior to Israel's victory in the Six-Day War, governance of the Palestinian territories was split between Egypt and Jordan, with the former having occupied the Gaza Strip and the latter having annexed the West Bank; the Sinai Peninsula and the Golan Heights were under the sovereignty of Egypt and Syria, respectively.

Territoires palestiniens occupés

Les zones A et B (en rouge), dites « autonomes » sont gérées civilement par l'Autorité palestinienne et la zone C (hachurée), incluant les colonies israéliennes . Jérusalem-Est, depuis sa conquête israélienne en juin 1967, est incluse dans la nouvelle municipalité unique de Jérusalem.

Palestiniens

Le terme Palestiniens désigne aujourd'hui un ensemble de populations arabophones établi principalement dans la région géographique de la Palestine (dans les Territoires palestiniens occupés, en Jordanie et en Israël). Dans son acception juridique, il désigne l'ensemble des personnes de nationalité palestinienne. L'identité nationale palestinienne s'est affirmée progressivement depuis la deuxième moitié du , et s'est essentiellement précisée au cours du conflit israélo-arabe, à mesure que celui-ci se poursuivait sous la forme d'un conflit israélo-palestinien.
