Geo-replicated data platforms are the backbone of several large-scale online services. Transactional Causal Consistency (TCC) is an attractive consistency level for building such platforms. TCC avoids many anomalies of eventual consistency, eschews the syn ...

We establish a theorem called the PCL theorem, which states that it is impossible to design a transactional memory algorithm that ensures (1) parallelism, i.e., transactions do not need to synchronize unless they access the same application objects, (2) ve ...

Database systems access memory either sequentially or randomly. Contrary to sequential access and despite the extensive efforts of computer architects, compiler writers, and system builders, random access to data larger than the processor cache has been s ...

Current online applications, such as search engines, social networks, or file sharing services, execute across a distributed network of machines. They provide non-stop services to their users despite failures in the underlying network. To achieve such a hi ...

Programmable self-assembly of modular robots offers promising means for structure formation at different scales. Rule-based approaches have been previously employed for distributed control of stochastic self-assembly processes. The assembly rate in the pro ...

The use of transactions in distributed systems dates back to the 70's. The last decade has also seen the proliferation of transactional systems. In the existing transactional systems, many protocols employ a centralized approach in executing a distributed ...

We present multiversion timestamp locking (MVTL), a new genre of multiversion concurrency control algorithms for serializable transactions. The key idea behind MVTL is simple: lock individual timestamps instead of locking objects. After presenting a generi ...

Transactional Causal Consistency (TCC) extends causal consistency, the strongest consistency model compatible with availability, with interactive read-write transactions, and is therefore particularly appealing for geo-replicated platforms. This paper pres ...

As hardware evolves, so do the needs of applications. To increase the performance of an application, there exist two well-known approaches. These are scaling up an application, using a larger multi-core platform, or scaling out, by distributing work to mul ...

Many distributed storage systems are transactional and a lot of work has been devoted to optimizing their performance, especially the performance of read-only transactions that are considered the most frequent in practice. Yet, the results obtained so far ...

Distributed skyline computation is important for a wide range of domains, from distributed and web-based systems to ISP-network monitoring and distributed databases. The problem is particularly challenging in dynamic distributed settings, where the goal is ...
