Class A shot-noise limited operation is achieved in an electrically pumped vertical external cavity surface emitting laser (VECSEL), opening the way for integration of such peculiar noiseless laser oscillation in applications where low power consumption an ...

Current advances in ultrafast electron microscopy make it possible to combine optical pumping of a nanostructure and electron beam probing with sub-Angstrom and femtosecond spatiotemporal resolution. We present a theory predicting that this technique can r ...

Silicon nitride has emerged as a prominent platform for building photonics integrated circuits. While its nonlinear properties based on third-order effects have been successfully exploited, an efficient second harmonic generation in standard stoichiometric ...

Quality factor (Q) is an important property of micro- and nano-electromechanical (MEM/NEM) resonators that underlie timing references, frequency sources, atomic force microscopes, gyroscopes, and mass sensors. Various methods have been utilized to tune the ...

We experimentally investigate the effects of erbium-doped fiber amplifier induced pump noise on soliton Kerr frequency combs for 64-quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) transmission. We find that the optical carrier-to-noise ratios (OCNRs) of the comb lin ...

In pump-probe time and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (TR-ARPES) experiments the presence of the pump pulse adds a new level of complexity to the photoemission process in comparison to conventional ARPES. This is evidenced by pump-induced vacuum ...

Hyperpolarized nuclear spins are observed in optically pumped iron-doped InP from 70 K to 140 K. P-31 NMR was carried out at 9.28 T (159.8 MHz) during optical excitation with circularly polarized light, using a laser diode (lambda-830 nm) as a source. The ...

Photonic crystal (PhC) cavities combine ultra-high quality (Q) factors with small mode volumes, resulting in an enhancement of the light-matter interaction at the nanoscale, which, beyond fundamental studies is advantageous for countless applications in ph ...

The electrical detection of surface spin polarization in Indium Phosphide (InP) is demonstrated. Using a planar four-terminal architecture on top of semi-insulating Fe: InP (001) wafers, optical orientation is separated from electrical detection. Spin filt ...

We report the coupling and interaction between shallow donors and microcavities in bulk GaN at THz frequencies. At 4K, the shallow donors lead to an absorption at 23.5 meV (5.7 THz) under optical pumping above the bandgap of GaN. The microcavities are base ...

Life sciences have a constantly growing need for novel methodological approaches suitable to investigate the intracellular environment with increased temporal and spatial resolutions. Recently, optical near-field probes, such as laser-irradiated pointed me ...

We report here on an integrated mini-lamp module (15x26x4 mm3) with a microfabricated rf-powered Rb dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) lamp (10x10x3 mm3) positioned on top of a 0.6 mm thick (thickness adjustable) 4-layer LTCC (Low Temperature Co-fired Cera ...

Brillouin scattering is particularly efficient and attractive for the implementation of strain and temperature distributed sensing in optical fibres. Recently a trend has been observed that modern advanced applications require a substantial step towards be ...

A new optical-fiber-based spectrofluorometer for in vivo or in vitro detection of delayed fluorescence is presented and characterized. This compact setup is designed so that it can be readily adapted for future clinical use. Optical excitation is done with ...

Stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) amplification of probe signals is highly polarization dependent. Maximum and minimum gain values are associated with a pair of orthogonal states of polarization (SOP), which are related to the pump SOP. Since the maxim ...

In a recent paper by Kovalev et al [Optics Express 17, 17317 (2009)] the coupled equations describing stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) were solved in the Fourier domain. The main conclusion driven by the authors was that SBS pump spectral broadening w ...

Optical low coherence reflectometry (OLCR) is non-destructive interferometric technique that allows measuring amplitude and phase of the light reflected from the device under test. OLCR is a powerful tool for the characterization of the various optical dev ...

We report on the current properties of Al1-x InxN (x approximate to 0.18) layers lattice- matched ( LM) to GaN and their specific use to realize nearly strain- free structures for photonic and electronic applications. Following a literature survey of the g ...

This work presents the development of an original concept of a side pumped diode pumped crystal laser for the generation of a high power near diffraction limited beam for material processing applications such as cutting, marking and drilling. An approach b ...

We have developed an apparatus to polarize 3He gas (at a few torrs pressure) by optical pumping from a 4He light source and to measure the evolution of the magnetic moment for relaxation studies. The magnetic moment is measured by applying a pulse of radio ...
