A new statistical wake meandering (SWM) model is proposed that improves on existing models in the literature. Compared to the existing SWM models, the proposed model has a closed description that does not require simulations to create look-up tables while ...

Dynamic downscaling of atmospheric forcing data to the hectometer resolution has shown increases in accuracy for landsurface models, but at great computational cost. Here we present a validation of a novel intermediate complexity atmospheric model, HICAR, ...

We studied the influence of the Planetary Boundary Layer (PBL) on the air masses sampled at the mountaintop Hellenic Atmospheric Aerosol and Climate Change station ((HAC) 2 ) at Mount Helmos (Greece) during the Cloud-AerosoL InteractionS in the Helmos back ...

Spatially non-local aspects of turbulent transport in tokamak plasmas are examined with global gyrokinetic simulations using the ORB5 code. Inspired by very accurate measurements in the TCV tokamak in L-mode, we initialise plasma profiles with constant log ...

A selection of achievements and first physics results are presented of the European Integrated Tokamak Modelling Task Force (EFDA ITM-TF) simulation framework, which aims to provide a standardized platform and an integrated modelling suite of validated num ...

Shear flows have a profound influence on turbulence-driven transport in tokamaks. The introduction of arbitrary initial flow profiles into the code ORB5 [Jolliet et al., Comput. Phys. Commun. 177, 409 (2007)] allows the convenient study of how flows on all ...

Nowadays, the global increase of energy demand and the necessity to satisfy high safety standards have led engineers and scientists to focus their efforts in order to understand and describe fundamental phenomena that are crucial for a correct design of th ...

The applications of Computational Fluid Dynamics, CFD, to hydraulic machines life require the ability to handle turbulent flows and to take into account the effects of turbulence on the mean flow. Nowadays, Direct Numerical Simulation, DNS, is still not a ...

Accurate microscale windfields computations over complex topography is crucial to many particle transport models but remains a challenging task. The objective of this work focuses on the numerical simulations of micro-scale windfields over the steep Gauder ...

Modeling air pollutant transport and dispersion in urban environments is especially challenging due to complex ground topography. In this study, we describe a large eddy simulation (LES) tool including a new dynamic subgrid closure and boundary treatment t ...

The present study deals with the shedding process of the Kármán vortices at the trailing edge of a 2D hydrofoil at high Reynolds numbers. Investigations are performed in order to evaluate the ability of an unsteady numerical simulation to accurately reprod ...

The study of turbulent flows has always been a challenge for scientists. Turbulent flows are common in nature and have an important role in several geophysical processes related to a variety of phenomena such as river morphology, landscape modeling, atmosp ...

Two major lines of investigation have been pursued in this thesis: (1) More efficient, robust and realistic numerical techniques are designed for the simulation of complex turbulent fluid flows; (2) A new algorithm and its analysis is performed in the cont ...

A scale-dependent dynamic subgrid model based on Lagrangian time averaging is proposed and tested in large eddy simulations sLESd of high-Reynolds number boundary layer flows over homogeneous and heterogeneous rough surfaces. The model is based on the Lagr ...

Cavitation is usually the main physical phenomenon behind performance alterations in hydraulic machinery. For this reason, it is crucial to accurately predict its inception and development and to highlight a comprehensive relation between the cavitation de ...
