The scale and pervasiveness of the Internet make it a pillar of planetary communication, industry and economy, as well as a fundamental medium for public discourse and democratic engagement. In stark contrast with the Internet's decentralized infrastructur ...

In this paper, we propose an analytical stochastic dynamic programming (SDP) algorithm to address the optimal management problem of price-maker community energy storage. As a price-maker, energy storage smooths price differences, thus decreasing energy arb ...

We discuss how the combination of experimental observations and rapid modeling has enabled to improve understanding of the tokamak ramp-down phase in ASDEX Upgrade. A series of dedicated experiments has been performed, to disentangle the effect of individu ...

Most modern in-memory online transaction processing (OLTP) engines rely on multi-version concurrency control (MVCC) to provide data consistency guarantees in the presence of conflicting data accesses. MVCC improves concurrency by generating a new version o ...

In the last decade, DNA has been increasingly investigated as an alternative medium for cold data storage, presenting several advantages over standard hard drives such as a higher density, longer lifespan and lower energy consumption. However, such coding ...

Distributed systems designers typically strive to improve performance and preserve availability despite failures or attacks; but, when strong consistency is also needed, they encounter fundamental limitations. The bottleneck is in replica coordination, whi ...

We introduce the first multitasking vision transformer adapters that learn generalizable task affinities which can be applied to novel tasks and domains. Integrated into an off-the-shelf vision transformer backbone, our adapters can simultaneously solve mu ...

The Dolev-Reischuk bound says that any deterministic Byzantine consensus protocol has (at least) quadratic (in the number of processes) communication complexity in the worst case: given a system with n processes and at most f < n/3 failures, any solution t ...

Advances in mobile computing have paved the way for new types of distributed applications that can be executed solely by mobile devices on Device-to-Device (D2D) ecosystems (e.g., crowdsensing). Sophisticated applications, like cryptocurrencies, need distr ...

With the increasing dominance of SSDs for local storage, today's network mounted virtual disks can no longer offer competitive performance. We propose a Log-Structured Virtual Disk (LSVD) that couples log-structured approaches at both the cache and storage ...

Exa-scale simulations are on the horizon but almost no new design for the output has been proposed in recent years. In simulations using individual time steps, the traditional snapshots are over resolving particles/cells with large time steps and are under ...

The aim of this paper is to serve as a lightweight introduction to concurrency control for database theorists through a uniform presentation of the work on robustness against Multiversion Read Committed and Snapshot Isolation. ...

The Dolev-Reischuk bound says that any deterministic Byzantine consensus protocol has (at least) quadratic communication complexity in the worst case. While it has been shown that the bound is tight in synchronous environments, it is still unknown whether ...

Achieving a successful plasma current ramp-up in a full tungsten tokamak can be challenging due to the large core radiation (and resulting low core temperature) that can be faced with this heavy metallic impurity if its relative concentration is too high. ...

Today, automatic control is integrated into a wide spectrum of real-world systems such as electrical grids and transportation networks. Many of these systems comprise numerous interconnected agents, perform safety-critical operations, or generate large amo ...

Utilization of edge devices has exploded in the last decade, with such use cases as wearable devices, autonomous driving, and smart homes. As their ubiquity grows, so do expectations of their capabilities. Simultaneously, their formfactor and use cases lim ...

The ability of dataflow circuits to implement dynamic scheduling promises to overcome the conservatism of static scheduling techniques that high-level synthesis tools typically rely on. Yet, the same distributed control mechanism that allows dataflow circu ...

Analytical engines rely on in-memory caching to avoid disk accesses and provide timely responses by keeping the most frequently accessed data in memory. Purely frequency- & time-based caching decisions, however, are a proxy of the expected query execution ...

Non-Volatile Memory (NVM) is an emerging type of memory device that provides fast, byte-addressable, and high-capacity durable storage. NVM sits on the memory bus and allows durable data structures designs similar to the in-memory equivalent ones. Expensiv ...

Writing a correct operating system kernel is notoriously hard. Kernel code requires manual memory management and type-unsafe code and must efficiently handle complex, asynchronous events. In addition, increasing CPU core counts further complicate kernel de ...
