Dielectric Elastomer Actuators (DEAs) have emerged as versatile and promising devices for a multitude of applications, including soft robotics, haptic interfaces, and artificial muscles. DEAs are an interesting soft actuator technology due to their high en ...

This paper proposes a data-driven control design method for nonlinear systems that builds upon the Koopman operator framework. In particular, the Koopman operator is used to lift the nonlinear dynamics to a higher-dimensional space where the so-called obse ...

Time-sensitive networks provide worst-case guarantees for applications in domains such as the automobile, automation, avionics, and the space industries. A violation of these guarantees can cause considerable financial loss and serious damage to human live ...

Humidity is a critical environmental factor in various applications, and its temperature dependence must be considered when developing thermo-hygrometer fiber sensors. The optical fibers that constitute the sensor must have a temperature reference, which s ...

Frequency Response Function (FRF)-based control synthesis methods for Linear Time-Invariant (LTI) systems have been widely used in control theory and industry. Recently, there has been renewed interest in these methods, employing numerical optimization too ...

This thesis demonstrates that it is feasible for systems code to expose a latency interface that describes its latency and related side effects for all inputs, just like the code's semantic interface describes its functionality and related side effects. S ...

Semiconductor materials have given rise to today's digital technology and consumer electronics. Widespread adoption is closely linked to the ability to process and integrate them in devices at scale. Where flexibility and large surfaces are required, such ...

Time-sensitive networks, as in the context of IEEE Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN) and IETF Deterministic Networking (DetNet), offer deterministic services with guaranteed bounded latency in order to support safety-critical applications. In this thesis, we ...

Dampers are devices that reduce delay jitter in the context of time-sensitive networks, by delaying packets for the amount written in packet headers. Jitter reduction is required by some real-time applications; beyond this, dampers have the potential to so ...

Microchannel plates based on amorphous silicon have the inherent capability to overcome the existing spatial and temporal resolution limitations of single photon detectors. A Monte Carlo model-based study is presented here that serves to exploit their full ...

Systematic extraction of locally valid dynamic models from experiments is necessary for controller design and the validation of high fidelity models. This paper describes the extraction of a dynamic model in the form of a transfer function, giving the dyna ...

Online services have become ubiquitous in technological society, the global demand for which has driven enterprises to construct gigantic datacenters that run their software. Such facilities have also recently become a substrate for third-party organizatio ...

We propose an all-optical switch based on an asymmetric directional coupler structure with epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) layer. The nonlinear optical properties the of ENZ layer are analyzed by hot-electron dynamics process, and the all-optical operating perform ...

Decentralized signal control of congested traffic networks based on the Max-Pressure (MP) controller is theoretically proven to maximize throughput, stabilize the system and balance queues for single intersections under specific conditions. However, its pe ...

Distributed LSM-based databases face throughput and latency issues due to load imbalance across instances and interference from background tasks such as flushing, compaction, and data migration. Hailstorm addresses these problems by deploying the database ...

High quality factor (Q) nanomechanical resonators have received a lot of attention for sensor applications with unprecedented sensitivity. Despite the large interest, few investigations into the frequency stability of high-Q resonators have been reported. ...

Flow reshaping is used in time-sensitive networks (as in the context of IEEE TSN and IETF Detnet) in order to reduce burstiness inside the network and to support the computation of guaranteed latency bounds. This is performed using per-flow regulators (suc ...

Organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs) show remarkable promise as biosensors, thanks to their high signal amplification, simple architecture, and the intrinsic flexibility of the organic material. Despite these properties, their use for real-time sens ...

The sense of touch is underused in today’s virtual reality systems due to lack of wearable, soft, mm-scale transducers to generate dynamic mechanical stimulus on the skin. Extremely thin actuators combining both high force and large displacement are a long ...

Objective: In this paper, a new vibrational modal analysis technique was developed for intraoperative cementless prosthesis fixation evaluation upon hammering. Methods: An artificial bone (Sawbones)-prosthesis system was excited by sweeping of a sine signa ...
