Which phenomenon slows down the dynamics in supercooled liquids and turns them into glasses is a long-standing question of condensed matter. Most popular theories posit that as the temperature decreases, many events must occur in a coordinated fashion on a ...

Fluids are pervasive in the Earth's crust and saturate fractures and faults. The combination of fluids and gouge layers developing along faults can generate fluids of different viscosities. Such viscous fluids were found to influence the reactivation, fric ...

Weak solutions arise naturally in the study of the Navier-Stokes and Euler equations both from an abstract regularity/blow-up perspective and from physical theories of turbulence. This thesis studies the structure and size of singular set of such weak solu ...

Excitatory and inhibitory neurons in diverse cortical regions are likely to contribute differentially to the transformation of sensory information into goal-directed motor plans. Here, we investigate the relative changes across mouse sensorimotor cortex in ...

We present a comprehensive study about the relationship between the way detailed balance is broken in non-equilibrium systems and the resulting violations of the fluctuation-dissipation theorem. Starting from stochastic dynamics with both odd and even vari ...

Spatiotemporally chaotic dynamics of transitional plane Couette flow may give rise to regular turbulent-laminar stripe patterns with a large-scale pattern wavelength and an oblique orientation relative to the laminar flow direction. A recent dynamical syst ...

Injection of fluids in geo-reservoirs can reduce the effective stresses at depth, lubricating the nearby faults, promoting slip and, potentially, earthquakes. High-viscous fluids are often used during hydraulic fracturing and production phases in geo-reser ...

Heat conduction in dielectric crystals originates from the dynamics of atomic vibrations, whose evolution is well described by the linearized Boltzmann transport equation for the phonon populations. Recently, it was shown that thermal conductivity can be r ...

Oscillator system (1) comprising:- a substantially planar frame (3);- a first sub-oscillator (5), a second sub-oscillator (7), a third sub-oscillator (9), and a fourth sub-oscillator (11), each sub-oscillator (5, 7, 9, 11) comprising a substantially rigid ...

Thermodynamic observables of mesoscopic systems can be expressed as integrated empirical currents. Their fluctuations are bound by thermodynamic uncertainty relations. We introduce the hyperaccurate current as the integrated empirical current with the leas ...

Steep mountain streams exhibit shallow waters with roughness elements such as stones and pebbles that are comparable in size to flow depth. Owing to the difficulty in measuring fluid velocities at the interface, i.e., from the rough permeable bed to the fr ...

We introduce a computational method to discover polymorphs in molecular crystals at finite temperature. The method is based on reproducing the crystallization process starting from the liquid and letting the system discover the relevant polymorphs. This id ...

Explanations for the evolution of delayed maturity usually invoke trade-offs mediated by growth, but processes of reproductive maturation continue long after growth has ceased. Here, we tested whether sexual selection shapes the rate of posteclosion matura ...

We use numerical simulations to study the effect of particle friction on suspension flows of non-Brownian hard particles. By systematically varying the microscopic friction coefficient mu(p) and the viscous number J, we build a phase diagram that identifie ...

Equilibrium and nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulations are combined to compute the full set of coefficients that appear in the phenomenological equations describing thermal transport in a binary mixture subject to a constant thermal, gradient The Dy ...

In surgical to industrial manipulation, the operator needs assistance for tasks requiring more than two hands. Teamwork may be the source of errors and inefficiency, especially if the assistant is a novice or unfamiliar with the main operator. The need for ...

Flows of hard granular materials depend strongly on the interparticle friction coefficient mu(p) and on the inertial number I, which characterizes proximity to the jamming transition where flow stops. Guided by numerical simulations, we derive the phase di ...

Applying time-resolved electroabsorption spectroscopy for the first time to methylammonium lead triiodide perovskite (MAPbI3) thin films under reverse bias, we monitored optically the ultrafast evolution of the local counter-electric field produced by the ...

Actin-myosin filament bundles (stress fibers) are critical for tension generation and cell shape, but their mechanical properties are difficult to access. Here we propose a novel approach to probe individual peripheral stress fibers in living cells through ...

A counterintuitive destabilizing effect of the surface tension in planar wakes has been observed by Tammisola et al. ["Effect of surface tension on global modes of confined wake flows," Phys. Fluids 23, 014108 (2011)] and Biancofiore et al. ["Direct numeri ...
