Two decades of secondary emission in quantum wells

Résumé

We review the rapid progress during the last years in the study of secondary emission in quantum wells. On the experimental side, this progress was characterized by ever increasing temporal, spectral, and spatial resolution. On the theoretical side, the most appropriate description of the resonant low-excitation regime is the paradigm of disorder-localized exciton center-of-mass wavefunctions as developed by Roland Zimmermann and collaborators. In our contribution to this Festschrift, we focus on the recent developments in the study of secondary emission and on the major contribution by Roland Zimmermann to the understanding of such phenomena.

Matter wave

Matter waves are a central part of the theory of quantum mechanics, being half of wave–particle duality. All matter exhibits wave-like behavior. For example, a beam of electrons can be diffracted just like a beam of light or a water wave. The concept that matter behaves like a wave was proposed by French physicist Louis de Broglie (dəˈbrɔɪ) in 1924, and so matter waves are also known as de Broglie waves.

X-ray Raman scattering

X-ray Raman scattering (XRS) is non-resonant inelastic scattering of X-rays from core electrons. It is analogous to vibrational Raman scattering, which is a widely used tool in optical spectroscopy, with the difference being that the wavelengths of the exciting photons fall in the X-ray regime and the corresponding excitations are from deep core electrons. XRS is an element-specific spectroscopic tool for studying the electronic structure of matter. In particular, it probes the excited-state density of states (DOS) of an atomic species in a sample.

Photoluminescence

La photoluminescence (PL) est un processus par lequel une substance absorbe des photons puis ré-émet des photons. Dans le cas d'un semi-conducteur, le principe est d'exciter des électrons de la bande de valence avec un photon d'une énergie supérieure à l'énergie de gap du composé, de telle sorte qu'ils se retrouvent dans la bande de conduction. L'excitation fait donc passer les électrons vers un état d'énergie supérieure avant qu'ils ne reviennent vers un niveau énergétique plus bas avec émission d'un photon.
