Combining optical gain in direct-bandgap III-V materials with tunable optical feedback offered by advanced photonic integrated circuits is key to chip-scale external-cavity lasers (ECL), offering wideband tunability along with low optical linewidths. Exter ...

The exponential growth in computing power and multimedia services has caused a tremendous increase in data traffic in recent years. This increase in data traffic brings a strong demand for data bandwidth of electrical input/output (I/O) links and pushes th ...

This thesis aims to explore and exploit trade-offs in integrated circuits and systems to overcome the fundamental bottlenecks faced by future data acquisition and communication systems. Specifically, we target the emerging implantable neurotechnology and t ...

Optical frequency combs are a series of phase-locked and equidistant laser lines in the spectral domain. In the time domain, they correspond to periodic pulse trains by the Fourier relation. The ability to shape optical combs and pulse trains is pivotal to ...

Emerging compositionally engineered complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS)-compatible platforms have been employed for high efficiencies in various on-chip applications, including optical parametric amplification and wavelength conversion. Combinin ...

This article introduces a wireline receiver (RX) data-path employing discrete multi-tone (DMT) modulation for communicating over electrical links. The DMT RX incorporates a fully digital equalization data-path, with a synthesized and automatically placed a ...

The ability to switch ferroics (ferro-, ferri-, antiferromagnets, ferroelectrics, multiferroics) between two stable bit states is one of the keystones of modern data storage technology. Due to many new ideas, originating from fundamental research during th ...

We experimentally demonstrate three-fold wavelength multicasting of a 64-quadrature-amplitude-modulation (QAM), 120-Gbit/s data channel using a microresonator Kerr frequency comb and nonlinear wave mixing. The multicasting is achieved with a data signal an ...

This paper presents a comparative study, analyzing the potentials of pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) for implementing next generation high-speed copper wireline links. This comparative study analyzes the sensitivities of PAM2, PAM4 and PAM8 to inter-symbo ...

JESD204B compliant low-voltage differential signaling (LVDS), and source-series-terminated (SST) transmitters in 28 nm FD-SOI CMOS technology are presented with 1.1 pJ/bit and 1.7 pJ/bit at 12.5 Gb/s, respectively. An external 6.25 GHz single-ended clock, ...

For communicating over mid-to-long-reach electrical links at a data-rate above 56Gb/s, ADC-based receiver (RX) has become a dominant architecture due to its strong equalization capability using complex digital signal processing algorithm benefiting from th ...

We experimentally investigate the effects of erbium-doped fiber amplifier induced pump noise on soliton Kerr frequency combs for 64-quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) transmission. We find that the optical carrier-to-noise ratios (OCNRs) of the comb lin ...

Conventional input/output (IO) links consume power, independent of changes in the bandwidth demand by the system they are deployed in. As the system is designed to satisfy the peak bandwidth demand, most of the time the IO links are idle but still consumin ...

The exponential growth of Internet traffic and related demands for higher communication speed pushes processor-to-processor and processor-to-memory interconnects to provide further higher data-rate. Often time, processor-to-memory interconnectsâ speed is ...

An accurate 16-channel seizure detection system-on-chip is presented, which is based on extracting features from the compressed recorded data using multichannel compressive sensing (MCS). MCS is used to reduce the transmission data rate of sparse biologica ...

Chip-scale frequency comb sources are key elements for a variety of applications, comprising massively parallel optical communications and high-precision optical metrology. In this talk, we give an overview on our recent progress in the area of integrated ...
