In situ energy generation in soft, flexible, autonomous devices is challenging due to the need for highly stretchable and fault-resistant components. Nanofluids with pyro-, tribo-, or thermoelectric properties have recently emerged as promising solutions f ...

The formation of elemental trigonal tellurium (t-Te) on tellurite glass surfaces exposed to femtosecond laser pulses is discussed. Specifically, the underlying elemental crystallization phenomenon is investigated by altering laser parameters in common tell ...

Thermoelectric conversion remains an active research field in light of its potential to enhance energy efficiency by waste heat recovery in a noise and wear-free manner. Nanostructuring is responsible for most of the recently reported improvements of the ...

The electrostatic screening properties of ionic fluids are of paramount importance in countless physical processes. Yet the screening behavior of ionic conductors out of thermal equilibrium has to date mainly been studied in the context of thermoelectric p ...

Measuring the thermoelectric transport properties of a material is a prerequisite to determining its usefulness for application in waste heat recovery or cooling and the basis for devising improvement strategies. While well-established characterization met ...

Crystals and glasses exhibit fundamentally different heat conduction mechanisms: the periodicity of crystals allows for the excitation of propagating vibrational waves that carry heat, as first discussed by Peierls in 1929, while in glasses the lack of per ...

Thermal conductivity (k) plays an essential role in functional devices. In some cases, high value is required to transfer heat efficiently. In others, low k assists in maintaining a temperature gradient necessary for device operation. It is profitable to d ...

Single crystal growth by chemical vapour transport has resulted samples with Fe1.35Ge stoichiometry. Structural study has shown that the large number of vacancies introduces an incommensuately modulated structure. The electrical resistivity is in the 200 m ...

Harvesting energy from ambient energy sources, such as thermal gradients is one solution to address the dramatic increase in energy consumption of personal electronics. While in the field, energy abundantly available in form of heat. The use of primary cel ...

Thermal transport is a key feature for the operation of phase change memory devices which rest on a fast and reversible transformation between the crystalline and amorphous phases of chalcogenide alloys upon Joule heating. In this paper we report on the ab ...

Silicon carbide based composites are candidates for structural components and fuel claddings in nuclear power plants. In the frame of accident tolerant fuel research, the effective through-thickness thermal conductivity of SiC/SiC prototype claddings is in ...

Hybrid (organic-inorganic) multication lead halide perovskites hold promise for a new generation of easily processable solar cells. Best performing compositions to date are multiple-cation solid alloys of formamidinium (FA), methylammonium (MA), cesium, an ...

Radiative-conductive heat transfer in porous media is usually investigated by decoupling the heat transfer modes and solving the volume-averaged continuum equations using effective transport properties. However, both modes are naturally coupled and couplin ...

A commercial scanning thermal microscope has been upgraded to facilitate its use in estimating the radial thermal diffusivity of thin films close to room temperature. The modified setup includes a microcontroller driven microhotplate coupled with a Bluetoo ...

The majority of interactions in solids strongly depend on the interatomic distances. The application of pressure changes the lattice parameters and modifies the electronic and the phononic energy spectra of a material avoiding some of the undesirable effec ...

TCOs are a class of metal oxides that combine transparency to visible light with electrical conductivity. Each TCO is characterized by the trade-off of these two properties which can be tuned for a particular application. This thesis is dedicated to the in ...

The topology of the electron wavefunctions in certain band insulators can give rise to novel topological phases. Materials harbouring such topological phases are termed topological insulators (TI). A gapped bulk electronic spectrum, described by a topologi ...

The hybrid halide perovskites, the very performant compounds in photovoltaic applications, possess large Seebeck coefficient and low thermal conductivity, making them potentially interesting high figure of merit (ZT) materials. For this purpose, one needs ...

Hybrid organometallic halide perovskites have been intensively investigated in the past few years, especially the CH3NH3PbI3, as highly efficient light harvesters for various optoelectronic application both for sensing and emitting light. However, despite ...
