Driftwood belongs to riverine ecosystems and is stored and transported in every natural stream. Hydraulic structures built in streams typically alter the flow characteristics and might consequently get in conflict with driftwood. The latter can get trapped ...

Chancy-Pougny is a run-of-river dam on the Swiss–French border constructed in the early 1920s. Since its commissioning, the operation of the four spillway gates has been responsible for a progressive erosion of the stilling basin. The future scour potentia ...

Dams are civil structures essential to modern civilization. However, they can be a threat if not properly designed and operated. A particular risk that potentially can lead to dam failure is the blocking of the spillway inlet with driftwood or debris. This ...

Advances in dam construction techniques have significantly increased the number of implemented stepped spillways worldwide. A key hydraulic feature of a stepped chute, compared to a smooth chute, is the enhanced energy dissipation resulting in a reduced re ...

Advances in dam construction techniques have significantly increased the number of stepped spillways implemented worldwide. Although stepped chutes provide enhanced energy dissipation along the chute, as compared to smooth chutes, an adequate energy dissip ...

In the last decades numerous stepped spillways were built, mostly on the downstream face of roller compacted concrete (RCC) dams. Stilling basins are often used as an energy dissipater. Although the hydraulics of stepped chutes was extensively investigated ...

The Kariba Dam is a 128 m high arch dam located on the Zambezi River, between Zambia and Zimbabwe. It forms the Kariba lake, with a surface of 5400 km2 and a capacity of 185 km3. In the 20 years following dam construction, heavy rainfalls required frequent ...

Chancy-Pougny is a run-of-river dam on the Swiss-French border constructed in the early 1920s. Since its inauguration, the operation of the four spillway gates was responsible for a progressive erosion of the stilling basin. Thus, a hybrid modelling was pe ...

Dam safety is strongly linked to the probability of occurrence of large floods. Floods can transport large wood (LW) into reservoirs and towards water release structures as spillways. Due to blocking and clogging, LW may significantly influence the dischar ...

We describe some recent developments in the efficient modelling of light-matter interactions in plasmonics and nanophotonics. In particular, we describe an efficient finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method to compute regularized quasinormal modes in re ...

Since its inauguration, in 1993, the horizontal weir crest of the Olympic fountain in Lausanne has suffered from differential settlings leading to a difference in level of more than 30 mm. The settling involves a visible non-uniform discharge distribution ...

Application of stepped spillways increases the energy dissipation rate along the spillway and may reduce the dimensions of the terminal energy dissipation structure. This pronounced energy dissipation makes stepped chutes attractive under various condition ...

Haraz dam under construction is located along Tehran-Amol road, 20 km upstream of the Amol city. A tunnel has been designed to detour the traffic temporarily around the dam site to avoid any closure of the main road. This tunnel will be integrated in the m ...

To protect spillways against cavitation damage, adding a small air concentration to the flow close to the invert is efficient. Aerator performance on smooth chutes was therefore well studied in terms of air entrainment and downstream air concentration deve ...

This paper describes the City Energy Analyst (CEA), a computational framework for the analysis and optimization of energy systems in neighborhoods and city districts. The framework allows analyzing the energy, carbon and financial benefits of multiple urba ...

Numerous stepped spillways were built to date, namely on RCC gravity dams or on valley flanks besides embankment or rockfill dams, while some others are currently under design or construction. In some cases, slope changes may be required on stepped chutes, ...

Since eco-efficiency of manufacturing resource has been emphasized, various sensors to measure energy consumption have been developed and machine tool builders also provide data of energy consumption of their own products. Due to the variety and complexity ...

Physical modeling represents probably the oldest design tool in hydraulic engineering together with analytical approaches. In free surface flows, the similitude based upon a Froude similarity allows for a correct representation of the dominant forces, name ...

Flood protection often calls on to the realization of retention works for bed load as well as wood and debris flow. Certain relatively recent arrangements did not perform according to their intended function, what shows the complexity of the design and the ...
