Intravenous (IV) iron-carbohydrate complexes are widely used nanoparticles (NPs) to treat iron deficiency anaemia, often associated with medical conditions such as chronic kidney disease, heart failure and various inflammatory conditions. Even though a ple ...

Purpose: This study was designed and conducted to validate the reference values of hematological parameters for healthy adult male and female residents of Kabul city, Afghanistan. Methodology: In this cross-sectional study, the samples were collected accor ...

Background: The gut microbiome and iron status are known to play a role in the pathophysiology of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), although their complex interaction remains unclear. Results: Here, we applied an integrative systems medicine approa ...

Iron sequestration is a recognized innate immune mechanism against invading pathogens mediated by iron-binding proteins called transferrins. Despite many studies on antimicrobial activity of transferrins in vitro, their specific in vivo functions are poorl ...

Iron deficiency is an important subclinical disease affecting over one billion people worldwide. A growing body of clinical records supports the use of intravenous iron-carbohydrate complexes for patients where iron replenishment is necessary and oral iron ...

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Renewal and patterning of the intestinal epithelium is coordinated by intestinal stem cells (ISCs); dietary and metabolic factors provide signals to the niche that control ISC activity. Bile acids (BAs), metabolites in the gut, signal nu ...

Microorganisms catalyze many of the redox transformations driving the iron cycle in the geosphere. For instance, iron cycling includes the reduction of solid-phase and soluble ferric iron (Fe(III)) to ferrous iron (Fe(II)). However, in order to reduce soli ...

We studied the role of the fish intestine as a barrier for organic chemicals using the epithelial barrier model built on the rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) intestinal cell line, RTgutGC and the newly developed exposure chamber, TransFEr, specifically ...

The gut of fish belongs to the most essential barriers that mark the border between the organism and its surrounding environment. The pivotal barrier function, allowing to absorb nutrients from the diet while simultaneously protecting the organism from pat ...

Nanotechnology offers new opportunities for providing health benefits in foods. Food fortification with iron phosphate nanoparticles (FePO4 NPs) is a promising new approach to reducing iron deficiency because FePO4 NPs combine high bioavailability with sup ...

Alkene functionality can be found in the majority of natural products, drugs, catalysts and organic materials. Therefore, methods of C-C double bond formation constitute a cornerstone of organic synthesis. Selective formation of either (Z)- or (E)-isomer i ...

Magnetic resonance elastography (MRE) is a powerful technique to assess the mechanical properties of living tissue. However, it suffers from reduced sensitivity in regions with short T-2 and T-2* such as in tissue with high concentrations of paramagnetic i ...

In this work, the antimicrobial effects of the photo-Fenton process on yeast cells were tested (Saccharomyces cerevisiae), an essential eukaryotic unicellular model of living cells. Near-neutral pH was used in all studies, while iron sulfate and iron citra ...

Cellular iron homeostasis is regulated by post-transcriptional feedback mechanisms, which control the expression of proteins involved in iron uptake, release and storage. Two cytoplasmic proteins with mRNA-binding properties, iron regulatory proteins 1 and ...

Iron-catalyzed alkylaryl Kumada coupling has developed into an efficient synthetic method, yet its mechanism remains vague. Here, we apply a bis(oxazolinylphenyl)amido pincer ligand (Bopa) to stabilize the catalytically active Fe center, resulting in isola ...

Background Superparamagnetic Iron Oxide Nanoparticles (SPION) are used in diagnostic imaging of a variety of different diseases. For such in-vivo application, an additional coating with a polymer, for example polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), is needed to stabilize ...

The immune system and iron availability are intimately linked as appropriate iron supply is needed for cell proliferation, while excess iron, as observed in hemochromatosis, may reduce subsets of lymphocytes. We have tested the effects of a ferritin H gene ...

The quantification of nanoparticles, particularly superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs), both in vitro and in vivo has become highly important in recent years. Some methods, such as induced coupled plasma (ICP) spectroscopy and UV-visible che ...

Advances in food transformation have dramatically increased the diversity of products on the market and, consequently, exposed consumers to a complex spectrum of bioactive nutrients whose potential risks and benefits have mostly not been confidently demons ...

The mammalian intestine is a prototype of a self-renewing organ. The rapid cellular turnover is supported by proliferating progenitors located in the intestinal crypt, which is also the stem cell location. Homeostasis of the intestinal epithelium has to be ...
