Author summary Adenylyl cyclases (ACs) are enzymes that can translate extracellular signals into the intracellular molecule cAMP, which is thus a 2nd messenger of extracellular events. The brain expresses nine membrane-bound AC variants, and AC5 is the dom ...

The amygdala is a brain area critical for the formation of fear memories. However, the nature of the teaching signal(s) that drive plasticity in the amygdala are still under debate. Here, we use optogenetic methods to investigate the contribution of ventra ...

Objective Segmented deep brain stimulation leads in the subthalamic nucleus have shown to increase therapeutic window using directional stimulation. However, it is not fully understood how these segmented leads with reduced electrode size modify the volume ...

Tourette syndrome is characterized by 'unvoluntary' tics, which are compulsive, yet often temporarily suppressible. The inferior frontal gyms is implicated in motor control, including inhibition of pre-potent actions through influences on downstream subcor ...

Dopamine released from midbrain neurons is an important neuromodulatory signal during associative learning in many forebrain circuits. One model of associative learning is auditory cued fear learning, during which an innocuous sensory percept like a tone ( ...

Excitatory projection neurons of the neocortex are thought to play important roles in perceptual and cognitive functions of the brain by directly connecting diverse cortical and subcortical areas. However, many aspects of the anatomical and functional orga ...

Aims/hypothesis In islets from individuals with type 2 diabetes and in islets exposed to chronic elevated glucose, mitochondrial energy metabolism is impaired. Here, we studied early metabolic changes and mitochondrial adaptations in human beta cells durin ...

Besides the main cortical inputs to the basal ganglia, via the corticostriatal projection, there is another input via the corticosubthalamic projection (CSTP), terminating in the subthalamic nucleus (STN). The present study investigated and compared the CS ...

OBJECTIVE The tremor circuitry has commonly been hypothesized to be driven by one or multiple pacemakers within the cerebello-thalamo-cortical pathway, including the cerebellum, contralateral motor thalamus, and primary motor cortex. However, previous stud ...

In the mouse whisker system, sensory information is relayed to the whisker somatosensory cortex by two major thalamic nuclei, the ventral posterior medial nucleus (VPM) and the posterior medial nucleus (POM). While the cortical axonal innervation pattern o ...

Parkinson's disease motor symptoms are treated with levodopa, but long‐term treatment leads to disabling dyskinesia. Altered synaptic transmission and maladaptive plasticity of corticostriatal glutamatergic projections play a critical role in the pathophys ...

Huntington's disease (HD) is a fatal genetic neurodegenerative disorder caused by a CAG repeat expansion in the Huntingtin gene of more than 36 repeats. This repeat is translated into a polyglutamine (polyQ) stretch within the first exon-encoded region of ...
