Rebar-to-concrete bond is a fundamental aspect of the behavior of reinforced concrete structures. The characterization of the interface response is challenging due to the complexity of the physical phenomena and the large number of factors involved. Locall ...

With the continuous improvement of system scale and complexity, model-based system engineering (MBSE) is of great importance in the practice of system engineering (SE). MBSE has been widely concerned in industry, especially in the field of complex equipmen ...

Elemental powder blends are an emerging alternative to prealloyed powders for high-throughput alloy design via additive manufacturing techniques. Elemental Al+Sc(+Zr) powder blends were processed by laser powder bed fusion into Al-Sc and Al-Sc-Zr alloys, w ...

In the quest for superlattices with engineered interfaces for disruptive applications such as neuromorphic computing, we present a dedicated study on the epitaxial growth of nominal GeTe/Sb2Te3 chalcogenide superlattices (CSL) on the Sb passivated Si(111) ...

Intensive research has been focused on the synthesis of N-modified TiO2 materials having visible light absorption in order to get higher solar photocatalytic degradation rates of pollutants in water. However, an exhaustive revision of the topic underlines ...

Assessing the traversability of rugged terrain is a difficult challenge for legged robots, especially when they implement multiple, distinct gaits. We tackle this problem on the k-rock2 amphibious, sprawling gait robot by training a gait-dependent traversa ...

Model calibration for building systems is a key step to achieving accurate and reliable predictions that reflect the dynamics of real systems under study. Calibration becomes particularly challenging when integrating building and HVAC dynamics, due to larg ...

We present an arbitrary 8x8 beam pattern projection system based on a programmable grating coupler array with a Fourier lens. The static power consumption and the reconfiguration time are below 1 mu W and 10 mu s, respectively. (C) 2021 The Author(s) ...

The fundamental goal of modern high-performance buildings is to achieve low environmental carbon footprint while securing indoor conditions that promote human health and well-being. Current procedures for indoor environmental quality (IEQ) assessment are o ...

In this study, three manifold-microchannel heat exchangers were additively manufactured by direct metal laser sintering. The heat exchangers were manufactured from stainless steel (SS17-4) with an overall dimension of 64.2 x 46.0 x 27.1 mm. The thermal and ...

This work considers multi-agent sharing optimization problems, where each agent owns a local smooth function plus a non-smooth function, and the network seeks to minimize the sum of all local functions plus a coupling composite function (possibly non-smoot ...

We present a new family of active surfaces for the semiautomatic segmentation of volumetric objects in 3D biomedical images. We represent our deformable model by a subdivision surface encoded by a small set of control points and generated through a geometr ...

Cities account for 75% of resource consumption and 80% of CO2 emissions. With rising urbanization, achieving urban sustainability becomes crucial. The Circular Economy (CE) concept has been proposed to reduce resource consumption, although its link to sust ...

Recent advances in composing Cloud applications have been driven by deployments of inter-networking heterogeneous microservices across multiple Cloud datacenters. System dependability has been of the upmost importance and criticality to both service vendor ...

It is a well-established fact in the field of Human-Robot Interaction that the personality a social robot is endowed with (i.e., the one it expresses by its gestures and words) plays a key role towards the engagement experienced by any person interacting w ...

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) and/or photodetection (PDD) based on protoporphyrin IX (PpIX) are used in many medical fields. However, the endogenous production of PpIX in tissues after administration of its precursor, 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA) or derivative ...

Recent state-of-the-art methods for skin lesion segmentation are based on convolutional neural networks (CNNs). Even though these CNN-based segmentation approaches are accurate, they are computationally expensive. In this paper, we address this problem and ...
