Significance: Diffuse correlation spectroscopy (DCS) allows label-free, non-invasive investigation of microvascular dynamics deep within tissue, such as cerebral blood flow (CBF). However, the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) in DCS limits its effective cerebra ...

The optical domain presents potential avenues for enhancing both computing and communication due to its inherent properties of bandwidth, parallelism, and energy efficiency. This research focuses on harnessing 3-Dimensional (3D) diffractive optics for nove ...

Photonics integrated circuits are a promising solution for the growing demands of data transmission and future system-on-chip technologies. Within this context, nonlinear optical interactions offer unique opportunities for all-optical processing, sampling, ...

Diode effects are of great interest for both fundamental physics and modern technologies. Electrical diode effects (nonreciprocal transport) have been observed in Weyl systems. Optical diode effects arising from the Weyl fermions have been theoretically co ...

Glass has been the material of choice for making optical elements, in large part due to its intrinsic properties: a temperature-dependent viscosity, which enables shaping the material into a broad variety of functional and artistic glassware. Silica glass ...

Photonic integrated circuits are paving the way for novel on-chip functionalities with diverse applications in communication, computing, and beyond. The integration of on-chip light sources, especially single-mode lasers, is crucial for advancing those pho ...

Conventional lasers typically support a well‐defined comb of modes. Coupling many resonators together to form larger complex cavities enables the design of the spatial and spectral distribution of modes, for sensitive and controllable on‐chip light sources ...

Organic upconverters made by integrating an infrared-sensitive photodetector with a light-emitting diode offer a low-cost route to visualize images taken in the infrared. However, making such devices sufficiently efficient is challenging. Here, upconversio ...

This thesis presents the development, construction, and benchmark of an experimental platform that combines cold fermionic 6Li atoms with locally controllable light-matter interactions. To enable local control, a new device, the cavity-microscope, was crea ...

A laser-based ultrasound inspection system comprising an object for inspection (1), a laser device for ultrasound generation (3a), a laser device for ultrasound detection (3b), and a coating arrangement (4) including a laser absorbing layer (4a) disposed o ...

We demonstrate a fully hybrid integrated electrooptic comb generator based on a dispersion engineered thin-film Lithium Tantalate microresonator featuring robust turnkey operation and record-broad >200nm span covering the entire telecommunications S, C, an ...

Recently, nonreciprocal two-dimensional unitary scattering networks have gained considerable interest due to the possibility of obtaining robust edge wave propagation in their anomalous topological insulating phase. However, zero-dimensional states in such ...

GaN exhibits a decomposition tendency for temperatures far below its melting point and common growth temperatures used in metal-organic vapour phase epitaxy (MOVPE).This characteristic is known to be a major obstacle for realising GaN bulk substrate. There ...

Since the dawn of humanity, human beings seeked to light their surroundings for their well-being, security and development. The efficiency of ancient lighting devices, e.g. oil lamps or candles, was in the order of 0.03-0.04% and jumped to 0.4-0.6% with th ...

For the EU DEMO conductor testing, a temperature sensor based on Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) optical fiber is studied at the EPFL Swiss Plasma Center. The SULTAN test facility has been upgraded to use fiber optic sensor for temperature monitoring and quench ...

We demonstrate a figure-of-9 all-fiber thulium-doped laser (TDFL) that generates 560 fs long pulses at 1948 nm wavelength. In order to achieve self-starting passive mode-locking, we utilize an in-fiber Faraday rotator to induce a nonreciprocal phase shift. ...

Excitons play an essential role in the optical response of two-dimensional materials. These are bound states showing up in the band gaps of many-body systems and are conceived as quasiparticles formed by an electron and a hole. By performing real-time simu ...

At room temperature, mechanical motion driven by the quantum backaction of light has been observed only in pioneering experiments in which an optical restoring force controls the oscillator stiffness1,2. For solid-state mechanical resonators in which oscil ...

Quantum ghost imaging can be an important tool in making optical measurements. One of the most useful aspects of ghost imaging is the unique ability to correlate two sets of independently collected information. We aim to use the principles of ghost imaging ...

Low-level light detection with high spatial and timing accuracy is a growing area of interest by virtue of applications such as light detection and ranging (LiDAR), biomedical imaging, time-resolved Raman spectroscopy, and quantum applications. Single-phot ...
