Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a widespread disease affecting approximately 20% of men. With a rising incidence due to the global ageing of the world population, it is estimated that over 322 million patients will be affected in 2025. While not being a lifet ...

Brain glucose hypometabolism has been singled out as an important contributor and possibly main trigger to Alzheimer's disease (AD). Intracerebroventricular injections of streptozotocin (icv-STZ) cause brain glucose hypometabolism without systemic diabetes ...

Analyzing isolated collagen gel samples of a rat-tail and bovine hide, we demonstrated in situ detection of spectrally deconvoluted auto-cathodoluminescence signatures of specific molecular content with precise spatial localization over a maximum field of ...

Systemic hypoxia-ischemia (HI) often occurs during preterm birth in human. HI induces injuries to hinder brain cells mainly in the ipsilateral forebrain structures. Such HI injuries may cause lifelong disturbances in the distant regions, such as the contra ...

Diseases or injuries affecting the nervous system can dramatically disrupt the quality of life. Despite extensive efforts towards treating dysfunctional nervous systems, the pharmacological and electrical approaches generally involved lack the temporal and ...

First human trials involving neuroprosthetic rehabilitation demonstrated recently that significant functional benefits can be achieved with lumbosacral neuromodulation and reorganized spared projections. However, complete spinal cord injuries (SCI) wholly ...

In the peripheral nervous system (PNS) myelinating Schwann cells synthesize large amounts of myelin protein zero (P0) glycoprotein, an abundant component of peripheral nerve myelin. In humans, mutations in P0 cause the demyelinating Charcot-Marie-Tooth 1B ...

Implantable electronic medical device (IEMD) is an emerging technology that plays an important role in the treatment of several neurological disorders such as epilepsy, especially in the cases of drug-resistant epilepsy. Recent developments and studies sho ...

Previous studies provide strong evidence for the therapeutic effect of electromagnetic fields (EMFs) on different tissues including cartilage. Diverse exposure parameters applied in scientific reports and the unknown interacting mechanism of EMF with biolo ...

After a spinal cord injury, axons fail to regenerate in the adult mammalian central nervous system, leading to permanent deficits in sensory and motor functions. Increasing neuronal activity after an injury using electrical stimulation or rehabilitation ca ...

We recently discovered a novel role for neuregulin-1 (Nrg1) signaling in mediating spontaneous regenerative processes and functional repair after spinal cord injury (SCI). We revealed that Nrg1 is the molecular signal responsible for spontaneous functional ...

Spinal cord injury (SCI) leads to permanent deficits in sensory and motor function due to the physical disruption of descending and ascending pathways. As a consequence, spinal circuits below the level of lesion remain in an intact, but inactive state. A n ...

Engineered fibrous tissues consisting of cells encapsulated within collagen gels are widely used three-dimensional (3D) in vitro models of morphogenesis and wound healing. While cell-mediated matrix remodeling that occurs within these scaffolds has been ex ...

AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) is a fundamental enzyme that controls energy homeostasis, through orchestrating the cellular response to a reduction in energy availability. Under conditions of cellular energy stress AMPK senses the decrease in ATP leve ...

Spinal cord injury (SCI) disrupts communication within central nervous system and lead to range of neurological disorders including paralysis. Current rehabilitation strategies to restore locomotion are poorly effective in people with severe SCI. Epidural ...

Ovarian hormones control mammary gland development and impinge on breast carcinogenesis acting via their cognate receptors in the luminal epithelium. The extracellular matrix has a key role in physiology and disease but how the two are linked is poorly und ...
