The digitization of timber construction, the emergence of engineered wood products, and the urgent need to drastically reduce buildings' environmental impact have given a rebirth to wood as a construction material. On the one hand, increasing the use of ti ...

The construction of dry-joint brick masonry that is subject to seismic loading can be modelled as a strategy problem wherein bricks must be laid to form a load resisting structure. To learn how to mount bricks while considering relevant engineering criteri ...

Design of Integrally-Attached Timber Plate Structures outlines a new design methodology for digitally fabricated spatial timber plate structures, presented with examples from recent construction projects. It proposes an innovative and sustainable design me ...

The immediate application of research discoveries requires a global and exact understanding of the structure under consideration. To gain insight into the complex behavior of structures, numerical simulations are carried out in parallel to physical experim ...

This paper presents an integrated design tool for structures composed of engineered timber panels that are connected by traditional wood joints. Recent advances in computational architecture have permitted to automate the fabrication and assembly of such s ...

In steel moment resisting frames (MRFs) with composite floor slabs, seismic loads are transmitted from the slab into the beam through shear studs. Shear strength degradation of the studs due to cyclic loading results into the loss of the load transfer mech ...

Earthquake loss estimation in composite-steel moment resisting frames (MRFs) necessitates a proper estimation of the level of damage in steel beam-to-slab connections. These usually feature welded headed shear studs to ensure the composite action between t ...

Traditional wood-wood connections, widely used in the past, have been progressively replaced by steel fasteners and bonding processes in modern timber constructions. However, the emergence of digital fabrication and innovative engineered timber products ha ...

The seismic performance of buildings depends critically on the stiffness and strength of storey diaphragms. Whilst for modern reinforced concrete or steel structures the connection between floors and lateral resisting members is often assumed as monolithic ...

The rise of digital fabrication has increased the use of wood-wood connections inspired by traditional carpentry in modern timber constructions. With recent developments on standard construction systems, the mechanical behavior of such joints for in-plane ...

This work fully investigates a specific timber joinery connection via experimental, analytical, and numerical methods. The selected joint is the Nuki joint: a mortised column with through-beam tenon. The experimental approach takes advantage of digital fab ...

We monitor dynamic rupture propagation during laboratory stick-slip experiments performed on saw-cut Westerly granite under upper crustal conditions (10-90 MPa). Spectral analysis of high-frequency acoustic waveforms provided evidence that energy radiation ...

Timber construction plays an important role in architectural history, in modern construction methods and in sustainable design, for which wood-only joinery techniques have been used for centuries. Traditional joinery typologies are the product of successiv ...

Structural behaviour of timber folded surface systems greatly depends on the connections ability to transfer the occurring forces between the adjacent elements and finally to the supports. This paper focuses on multiple tab-and-slot joints (MTSJ), where di ...

In the field of timber load-bearing structures, adhesive bonding is a promising joining technique that may increase the structural stiffness and capacity of timber joints and structures. The use of ductile adhesives may furthermore allow designing ductile ...

The paper presents experimental investigations of friction properties (a) between adjacent sheathing panels made of Oriented Strand Board (OSB) and (b) between OSB panels and glued laminated timber (GLT) frame members as they occur, for example, between pa ...

In structural engineering, folded surface structures present one of the concepts for construction of self supporting column free systems. They utilize structural benefits of folding to achieve material saving and improve structural efficiency. The folding ...

This article presents a new lightweight construction system for doubly curved shells made from timber plates, inspired by the masonry vaults of Eladio Dieste. The system was developed for a specific case-study project, and general applications to other fre ...

Integral Mechanical Attachment (IMA) uses features in the form of components for their connection. In addition to the transfer of forces, locator features are used as integral assembly guides. Prismatic, single-degree-of-freedom (1DOF) joints only allow fo ...

Automatic joinery has become a common technique for the jointing of beams in timber framing and roofing. It has revived traditional, integral joints such as mortise and tenon connections. Similarly, but only recently, the automatic fabrication of tradition ...
