Inspired by the human ability to localize sounds, even with only one ear, as well as to recognize objects using active echolocation, we investigate the role of sound scattering and prior knowledge in regularizing ill-posed inverse problems in acoustics. In ...

Gait bouts (GB), as a prominent indication of physical activity, contain valuable fundamental information closely associated with human & x2019;s health status. Therefore, objective assessment of the GB (e.g. detection, spatio-temporal analysis) during dai ...

Functional time series analysis, whether based on time or frequency domain methodology, has traditionally been carried out under the assumption of complete observation of the constituent series of curves, assumed stationary. Nevertheless, as is often the c ...

Atomic force microscopy based approaches have led to remarkable advances in the field of mechanobiology. However, linking the mechanical cues to biological responses requires complementary techniques capable of recording these physiological characteristics ...

The legacy of Joseph Fourier in science is vast, especially thanks to the essential tool that the Fourier transform is. The flexibility of this analysis, its computational efficiency and the physical interpretation it offers makes it a cornerstone in many ...

Insights into the micro- and nano-architecture of materials is crucial for understanding and predicting their macroscopic behaviour. In particular, for emerging applications such as meta-materials, the micrometer scale becomes highly relevant. The micro-ar ...

Modern power systems are at risk of largely reducing the inertia of generation assets and prone to experience extreme dynamics. The consequence is that, during electromechanical transients triggered by large contingencies, transmission of electrical power ...

Displacement data modelling is of great importance for the safety control of concrete dams. The commonly used artificial intelligence method modelled the displacement data at each monitoring point individually, i.e., the data correlations between the monit ...

In a variety of fields, in particular those involving imaging and optics, we often measure signals whose phase is missing or has been irremediably distorted. Phase retrieval attempts to recover the phase information of a signal from the magnitude of its Fo ...

The application of orthogonal sampling for parallel neural recording is presented in this paper. Orthogonal sampling enables reducing the number of the I Cs in conventional recording systems into one single unit. Consequently, the ADC bandwidth and dynamic ...

In this paper we introduce an open source and reproducible microphone array hardware design and an anechoic dataset recorded with this array. The Pyramic array has 48 microphones spread onto six identical modules connected to an FPGA-ARM combo. The arrange ...

Remote microphone systems significantly improve speech intelligibly performance offered by hearing aids. The voice of the speaker(s) is captured close to the mouth by a microphone, then wirelessly sent to the hearing aids. However, the sound is rendered in ...
