The global construction industry contributes to 37% of carbon emissions associated to both building operations and construction. To help achieve the net-zero targets set by 2050, it is mandated to achieve a 50% reduction in carbon emissions by 2030. As we ...

The transition from fossil-based to renewable energy sources requires the adoption of intermittent, decentralized energy generation technologies. Therefore, the integration of energy storage technologies is becoming increasingly important. The impact of op ...

The official Spherical Tokamak for Energy Production mission aims to demonstrate the ability to generate net electricity from fusion with the STEP Prototype Power plant. One of the key technological and engineering challenges in fusion power plants is mana ...

The aircraft assembly system is highly complex involving different stakeholders from multiple domains. The design of such a system requires comprehensive consideration of various industrial scenarios aiming to optimize key performance indicators. Tradition ...

This paper presents the cooling concept for a medium voltage modular multilevel converter cell. To optimize power density, the metallic enclosure is used to dissipate the heat generated by semiconductor losses, while maintaining maximum temperatures below ...

A design concept is proposed for the building block, a dot, of programmable braille readers utilizing bistable shell buckling, magnetic actuation, and pneumatic loading. The design process is guided by Finite Element simulations, which are initially valida ...

Driven by the rising popularity of chatbots such as ChatGPT, there is a budding line of research proposing guidelines for chatbot design, both in general and specifically for digital education. Nevertheless, few researchers have focused on providing concep ...

During the conceptual design phase of an aircraft manufacturing system, different industrial scenarios need to be evaluated against performance indicators in a collaborative engineering process. Domain experts' knowledge and the motivations for decision-ma ...

While systems designers are increasingly turning to hardware accelerators for performance gains, realizing these gains is painstaking and error-prone. It can take several person-months to determine if a given accelerator is a good fit for a given piece of ...

In this chapter, we discuss field experiments in surveys that are conducted with the purpose of learning about expectation formation and the link between expectations and behavior. We begin by reviewing the rationale for conducting experiments within surve ...

In this thesis we design online combinatorial optimization algorithms for beyond worst-case analysis settings. In the first part, we discuss the online matching problem and prove that, in the edge arrival model, no online algorithm can achieve a competiti ...

In accordance with the Paris agreement, the Swiss Climate Strategy (SCS) defines the net-zero target to be reached before 2050, which demands for a thoughtful carbon budget allocation between the different contributors. Ongoing normalization tasks are curr ...

Millimeter wave (mmWave) frequencies has become a research area of interest in recent years because of providing broad available bandwidth and thus higher data rates. Wideband mmWave antenna is one of the important development areas in wireless communicati ...

The modern world is heavily reliant on electromagnetic devices to convert mechanical energy into electrical energy and vice versa. These devices are fundamental to powering our society, and the growing need for automated production lines and electrified tr ...

Despite their high sensitivity and their suitability for miniaturization, biosensors are still limited for clinical applications due to the lack of reproducibility and specificity of their detection performance. The design and preparation of sensing surfac ...

Although often regarded a childhood toy, the design of paper airplanes is subtly complex. The design space and mapping from geometry to distance flown is highly nonlinear and probabilistic where a single airplane design exhibits a multitude of trajectory f ...

Design exploration is a creative process that consists of the incremental generation of design candidates. Supported by digital means or not, the process handles the ill-structured nature of design and allows creativity to flourish through diversity of des ...

The main goal of my research is to establish guidelines for workplace design based on human biomechanics: specifically sitting workplaces and handling areas in 1/6G-1/3G (Moon, Mars) conditions. Such a workplace could be used in long-term space missions in ...

In this thesis, we present a theory of value for the design and analysis of service ecosystems. The theory is based on general systems thinking. The concept of a system is used for relating knowledge from different disciplines (such as software engineering ...

An attempt is made to translate five generic key performance indicators (KPIs) into a continuous real-time cost function in a batch order-based manufacturing environment. The challenge of controlling and optimizing resource utilization, production efficien ...
