Microscopic visualisation of optically transparent samples has been a topic of interest for several decades. Features such as density or chemical composition can influence the optical phase of transmitted light, and phase contrast can reveal these structur ...

We introduce a lock-in method to increase the phase contrast in incoherent Differential Phase Contrast (DPC) imaging. The use of a smart pixel detector with in-pixel signal demodulation, paired with synchronized illumination, provides the basis of a bit-ef ...

The topic of this thesis is the development of new algorithmic reconstruction methods for quantitative phase imaging (QPI). In the past decade, advanced QPI has emerged as a valuable tool to study label-free biological samples and uncover their 3D structur ...

In this thesis, we study systems of active particles interacting via generic torques of different nature. We analyze the phase behavior of these systems, which results from the interplay between self-propulsion, excluded-volume and torques. We tackle the p ...

Using the corner-transfer matrix renormalization group to contract the tensor network that describes its partition function, we investigate the nature of the phase transitions of the hard-square model, one of the exactly solved models of statistical physic ...

In this thesis, we study the 3 challenges described above. First, we study different reconstruction techniques and assess the fidelity of each reconstruction results by means of structured illumination and phase conjugation. By reconstructing the 3D refrac ...

The magnetic force microscope (MFM) is an established experimental tool for imaging stray fields with high spatial resolution and sensitivity. The MFM contrast can however contain contributions from the sample topography, variations in the surface Kelvin p ...

Structured light generation having broad applications in different optical fields, is the topic of this thesis. Our structured light generation strategy is based on applying periodic microoptical elements at the refraction-diffraction limit, under a focuse ...

Quantitative phase imaging (QPI) is an emerging label-free technique that produces images containing morphological and dynamical information without contrast agents. Unfortunately, the phase is wrapped in most imaging system. Phase unwrapping is the comput ...

Materials composed of elements from the third and fifth columns of the periodic table display a very rich behavior, with the phase diagram usually containing a metallic liquid phase and a polar semiconducting solid. As a consequence, it is very hard to ach ...

Moiré effects result from the superimposition of repetitive structures. The beauty of these moirés comes from the fact that macroscopic shapes seem to appear from the superposition of layers containing microscopic patterns. In addition, the moirés are dyna ...

Low-loss nanostructured dielectric metasurfaces have emerged as a breakthrough platform for ultrathin optics and cutting-edge photonic applications, including beam shaping, focusing, and holography. However, the static nature of their constituent materials ...

Convergent beam electron diffraction (CBED) patterns of twisted bilayer samples exhibit interference patterns in their CBED spots. Such interference patterns can be treated as off-axis holograms and the phase of the scattered waves, and hence the interlaye ...

We propose a simultaneous noise filtering and phase unwrapping algorithm. Spatial evolution of phase is modeled as an autoregressive Gaussian Markov random field. Accordingly, phase value at a pixel is related to phase values at surrounding pixels in a pro ...

Optical microscopy is one widely used tool to study cell functions and the interaction of molecules at a sub-cellular level. Optical microscopy techniques can be broadly divided into two categories: partially coherent and incoherent. Coherent microscopy te ...

Purpose : Based on oblique partially coherent illumination of transparent samples, we developed a simple custom Optical Phase Imaging (OPI) microscope providing a label-free, semi-quantitative phase contrast imaging. The aim of this study was to explore th ...

Two superposed layers of transparent cylindrical lenslet gratings create classical moiré fringes when illuminated from behind. We rely on this observation to conceive special devices made of superposed lenslet gratings that produce compelling beating shape ...

We investigate the far-field pattern generation for a micro-lens array (MLA) illuminated under different conditions. Plane wave and Gaussian beam illumination are considered for an MLA with a small diameter of 27 microns and 30 microns period. At these dim ...

Significance: Despite recent developments in microscopy, temporal aliasing can arise when imaging dynamic samples. Modern sampling frameworks, such as generalized sampling, mitigate aliasing but require measurement of temporally overlapping and potentially ...

Noting the fact that the phase and phase derivatives carry the information on the mechanical deformation in optical interferometric measurements techniques, we propose a noise robust fringe analysis technique for the simultaneous estimation of unwrapped ph ...
