Driven by the demand for real-time processing and the need to minimize latency in AI algorithms, edge computing has experienced remarkable progress. Decision-making AI applications stand out for their heavy reliance on data-centric operations, predominantl ...

Situational awareness strategies are essential for the reliable and secure operation of the electric power grid which represents critical infrastructure in modern society. With the rise of converter-interfaced renewable generation and the consequent shift ...

Many future fusion devices will rely heavily, if not solely, on electron cyclotron (EC) heating subsystems to provide bulk heating, instability control (neoclassical tearing mode (NTM) stabilization), and thermal instability control. Efficient use of the i ...

This paper presents an investigation on the possibility of arecanut palm leaf as a biomaterial substrate for various microwave devices such as transmission lines, antenna, filter and a radio frequency identification device (RFID). The dielectric properties ...

An exact analytical expression for the electric field of the return stroke as excited by a propagating step current source is derived in this paper. This expression could be advantageously used to evaluate the disturbances caused by lightning on overhead l ...

Modern hardware is increasingly complex, requiring increasing effort to understand in order to carefully engineer systems for optimal performance and effective utilization. Moreover, established design principles and assumptions are not portable to modern ...

This paper proposes a tower-foot grounding system model compatible with EMT programs which might be useful for the simulation of lightning transients in overhead lines. The proposed model is based on the solution of the telegrapher's equations and the appl ...

Owing to the advancements in the area of power electronics, efficient and flexible ac to dc conversion is made possible, bringing back into focus the idea of the dc power transmission at various voltage levels. Several technical and economical factors advo ...

The demise of Moore's Law and Dennard scaling has resulted in diminishing performance gains for general-purpose processors, and so has prompted a surge in academic and commercial interest for hardware accelerators. Specialized hardware has already redefine ...

Embedded systems confront two opposite goals: low-power operation and high performance. The current trend to reach these goals is toward heterogeneous platforms, including multi-core architectures with heterogeneous cores and hardware accelerators. The lat ...

Precise exceptions are a cornerstone of modern computing as they provide the abstraction of sequential instruction execution to programmers while accommodating microarchitectural optimizations. However, increasing compute capabilities in deep memory hierar ...

The miniaturization of integrated circuits (ICs) and their higher performance and energy efficiency, combined with new machine learning algorithms and applications, have paved the way to intelligent, interconnected edge devices. In the medical domain, they ...

Analytical workloads are evolving as the number of users surges and applications that submit queries in batches become popular. However, traditional analytical databases that optimize-then-execute each query individually struggle to provide timely response ...

In this chapter, we discussed the TL theory and its application to the problem of lightning electromagnetic field coupling to transmission lines. After a short discussion on the underlying assumptions of the TL theory, we described seemingly different but ...

This article summarizes the electromagnetic time-reversal (EMTR) technique for fault location, and further numerically validates its effectiveness when the fault impedance is negligible. In addition, a specific EMTR model considering the fault impedance is ...

A closed time-reversal (TR) cavity has been considered a purely theoretical concept whose experimental realization was assumed to be impossible. In this article, we demonstrate that it is, in fact, possible to realize a closed TR cavity using a network of ...

The transmission overload after a disturbance poses significant security risk to the power system. Once it happens, an efficient remedial action must be taken to relieve the line overloads as quickly as possible. The line overload mitigation problem become ...

Circuit breakers (CBs) play an important role in modern society because they make the power transmission and distribution systems reliable and resilient. Therefore, it is important to maintain their reliability and to monitor their operation. A key to ensu ...

This paper investigates the effect of frequency-dependent soil parameters on the simulation of electromagnetic transients on overhead lines, based on the application of the FDTD method to solve the telegrapher’s equations. The ground return impedance is ca ...

On ITER, long pulse gyrotrons are required as a power source for electron cyclotron heating (ECH) and current drive (CD). The microwaves are guided from the gyrotrons, which are placed far from the Tokamak, into the plasma by transmission lines (TLs) and a ...
