Diagnostics play a pivotal role in nuclear fusion experimental reactors, supporting physical studies, modelling, and plasma control. However, most diagnostics provide limited and partial information about the plasma's status. For instance, magnetic probes ...

Photometric stereo, a computer vision technique for estimating the 3D shape of objects through images captured under varying illumination conditions, has been a topic of research for nearly four decades. In its general formulation, photometric stereo is an ...

Volume electron microscopy is the method of choice for the in situ interrogation of cellular ultrastructure at the nanometer scale, and with the increase in large raw image datasets generated, improving computational strategies for image segmentation and s ...

Patterns in nature arise from processes interacting across a continuum of spatial scales, where new relationships emerge at each level of investigation. These patterns are nested features encompassing fine-scale local patterns, such as topography and geolo ...

A wide range of systems were exposed to a seawater-like chloride concentration (0.5 M Cl−) for bulk diffusion experiments over 0.5, 1 and 4 years. Combined with previously published findings on chloride binding and mini-migration testing, the results showe ...

Differentiable rendering (DR) is an emerging field that facilitates the calculation and propagation of gradients of 3D objects through images. In contrast to deep neural networks (DNNs), which generally lack the understanding of 3D objects that form the im ...

Depending on the environmental conditions, concrete materials can come into contact with sulfate ions which are widely present in rivers, underground water, sewers, seawater and soil. Sulfates can react with the cement paste in concrete and cause damage wh ...

To reduce the CO2 footprint of construction materials, concrete producers blend their cement with Supplementary Cementitious Materials (SCMs). SCMs such as fly ash or blast furnace slag are mostly the byproducts of other industries. And while SCMs are chos ...

Live imaging of organoid growth remains a challenge: it requires long-term imaging of several samples simultaneously and dedicated analysis pipelines. Here the authors report an experimental and image processing framework to turn long-term light-sheet imag ...

The inclusion of high specific surface materials such as calcined clays in cementitious systems enhances the hydration of clinker products at very early ages, but it may also increase water demand; thus, the pursuit of a flowing concrete may demand an incr ...

Due to a significant influence of strontium (Sr) on bone regeneration, Sr substituted beta-tricalcium phosphate (Sr-TCP) cement is prepared and investigated by short- and long-term time-resolved techniques. For short-term investigations, energy-dispersive ...

Amorphous solids such as coffee foam, toothpaste, or mayonnaise display a transient creep flow when a stress E is suddenly imposed. The associated strain rate is commonly found to decay in time as gamma_ -t-nu, followed either by arrest or by a sudden flui ...

The project aims to validate some recent theoretical developments on the deformation twinning nucleation mechanism in HCP metals through small-scale mechanic experiments. To this end, a systematic investigation of the mechanical response of pure magnesium ...

This chapter tells the story of Portland cement, from its invention in the tured mineral product. The success story of Portland cement is rooted in the unique combination of the abundance of its raw materials, the reactivity of the high-temperature clinker ...

Valorisation of locally available clays for producing blended cements is crucial for a widespread adoption of sustainable binders incorporating these materials. In some places, clays can be intermixed with small amounts of iron sulfides, which could eventu ...

We investigate the problem of fluid injection at constant pressure in a 2D Discrete Fracture Network (DFN) with randomly oriented and uniformly distributed frictionally-stable fractures. We show that this problem shares similarities with the simpler scenar ...

This paper establishes the close relation that exists between the Fano noise suppression factor F and the Gm/ID FoM showing that F is proportional to the product of the thermal noise excess factor γn and the normalized Gm/ID function. Taking advantage of t ...

The reaction kinetics of the alkali silica reaction depends on the composition of the pore solution. The evolution of the pore solution composition in different cement pastes and concretes was studied. Pastes containing silica fume or metakaolin had the lo ...

The quantification of uncertainties can be particularly challenging for problems requiring long-time integration as the structure of the random solution might considerably change over time. In this respect, dynamical low-rank approximation (DLRA) is very a ...

It is well established that surface topography can affect cell functions. However, finding a reproducible and reliable method for regulating stem cell behavior is still under investigation. It has been shown that cell imprinted substrates contain micro- an ...
