Classic image-restoration algorithms use a variety of priors, either implicitly or explicitly. Their priors are hand-designed and their corresponding weights are heuristically assigned. Hence, deep learning methods often produce superior image restoration ...

This thesis consists of three applications of machine learning techniques to empirical asset pricing. In the first part, which is co-authored work with Oksana Bashchenko, we develop a new method that detects jumps nonparametrically in financial time series ...

Deep neural networks have become ubiquitous in today's technological landscape, finding their way in a vast array of applications. Deep supervised learning, which relies on large labeled datasets, has been particularly successful in areas such as image cla ...

State-of-the-art methods for self-supervised sequential action alignment rely on deep networks that find correspon- dences across videos in time. They either learn frame-to- frame mapping across sequences, which does not leverage temporal information, or a ...

Control design for robotic systems is complex and often requires solving an optimization to follow a trajectory accurately. Online optimization approaches like Model Predictive Control (MPC) have been shown to achieve great tracking performance, but requir ...

Deep neural networks trained on physical losses are emerging as promising surrogates for nonlinear numerical solvers. These tools can predict solutions to Maxwell's equations and compute gradients of output fields with respect to the material and geometric ...

Despite their impressive performance on image classification tasks, deep networks have a hard time generalizing to unforeseen corruptions of their data. To fix this vulnerability, prior works have built complex data augmentation strategies, combining multi ...

Sharpness-Aware Minimization (SAM) is a recent training method that relies on worst-case weight perturbations which significantly improves generalization in various settings. We argue that the existing justifications for the success of SAM which are based ...

Meta-learning is the core capability that enables intelligent systems to rapidly generalize their prior ex-perience to learn new tasks. In general, the optimization-based methods formalize the meta-learning as a bi-level optimization problem, that is a nes ...

To obtain a more complete understanding of material microstructure at the nanoscale and to gain profound insights into their properties, there is a growing need for more efficient and precise methods that can streamline the process of 3D imaging using a tr ...

In the recent years, Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) have managed to succeed at tasks that previously appeared impossible, such as human-level object recognition, text synthesis, translation, playing games and many more. In spite of these major achievements, o ...

The rapid progress in the field of deep learning has had a significant impact on protein design. Deep learning methods have recently produced a breakthrough in protein structure prediction, leading to the availability of high-quality models for millions of ...

In several machine learning settings, the data of interest are well described by graphs. Examples include data pertaining to transportation networks or social networks. Further, biological data, such as proteins or molecules, lend themselves well to graph- ...

Years of a fierce competition have naturally selected the fittest deep learning algorithms. Yet, although these models work well in practice, we still lack a proper characterization of why they do so. This poses serious questions about the robustness, trus ...

We establish a direct connection between general tensor networks and deep feed-forward artificial neural networks. The core of our results is the construction of neural-network layers that efficiently perform tensor contractions and that use commonly adopt ...

In the last decade, deep neural networks have achieved tremendous success in many fields of machine learning. However, they are shown vulnerable against adversarial attacks: well-designed, yet imperceptible, perturbations can make the state-of-the-art deep ...

Anomaly Detection systems based on Machine and Deep learning are the most promising solutions to detect cyberattacks in the industry. However, these techniques are vulnerable to adversarial attacks that downgrade prediction performance. Several techniques ...

With the increasing amount of available data and advances in computing capabilities, deep neural networks (DNNs) have been successfully employed to solve challenging tasks in various areas, including healthcare, climate, and finance. Nevertheless, state-of ...

The success of deep learning may be attributed in large part to remarkable growth in the size and complexity of deep neural networks. However, present learning systems raise significant efficiency concerns and privacy: (1) currently, training systems are l ...

Deep neural networks have achieved impressive results in many image classification tasks. However, since their performance is usually measured in controlled settings, it is important to ensure that their decisions remain correct when deployed in noisy envi ...
