Despite the widespread empirical success of ResNet, the generalization properties of deep ResNet are rarely explored beyond the lazy training regime. In this work, we investigate scaled ResNet in the limit of infinitely deep and wide neural networks, of wh ...

Induced seismicity caused by anthropogenic modification of the subsurface effective stress state has been observed in a number of industrial applications -- from hydrocarbon extraction (e.g., Groningen [1]), drilling waste-water disposal (e.g., [2]) to the ...

Linear-Quadratic-Gaussian (LQG) control is a fundamental control paradigm that is studied in various fields such as engineering, computer science, economics, and neuroscience. It involves controlling a system with linear dynamics and imperfect observations ...

Permeability measurements of engineering textiles exhibit large variability as no standardization method currently exists; numerical permeability prediction is thus an attractive alternative. It has all advantages of virtual material characterization, incl ...

We consider a class of parabolic stochastic PDEs on bounded domains D c Rd that includes the stochastic heat equation but with a fractional power gamma of the Laplacian. Viewing the solution as a process with values in a scale of fractional Sobolev spaces ...

Rare events include many of the most interesting transformation processes in condensed matter, from phase transitions to biomolecular conformational changes to chemical reactions. Access to the corresponding mechanisms, free-energy landscapes and kinetic r ...

Metal-based Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF) has made fabricating intricate components easier. Yet, assessing part quality is inefficient, relying on costly Computed Tomography (CT) scans or time-consuming destructive tests. Also, intermittent inspection of ...

We propose a mathematical and numerical model for the simulation of the heart function that couples cardiac electrophysiology, active and passive mechanics and hemodynamics, and includes reduced models for cardiac valves and the circulatory system. Our mod ...

Image noise can often be accurately fitted to a Poisson-Gaussian distribution. However, estimating the distribution parameters from a noisy image only is a challenging task. Here, we study the case when paired noisy and noise-free samples are accessible. N ...

Humans can rapidly estimate the statistical properties of groups of stimuli, including their average and variability. But recent studies of so-called Feature Distribution Learning (FDL) have shown that observers can quickly learn even more complex aspects ...

This paper examines the minimization of the cost for an expected random production output, given an assembly of finished goods from two random inputs, matched in two categories. We describe the optimal input portfolio, first using the standard normal appro ...

We propose two different discrete formulations for the weak imposition of the Neumann boundary conditions of the Darcy flow. The Raviart-Thomas mixed finite element on both triangular and quadrilateral meshes is considered for both methods. One is a consis ...

We consider the problem of non-negative super-resolution, which concerns reconstructing a non-negative signal x = Sigma(k )(i=1)a(i)delta(ti) from m samples of its convolution with a window function phi(s - t), of the form y(s(j)) = Sigma(k)(i=1) a(i) phi( ...

This paper reports the results of an international benchmark exercise on the measurement of fibre bed compaction behaviour. The aim was to identify aspects of the test method critical to obtain reliable results and to arrive at a recommended test procedure ...

We study the large deviations of the power injected by the active force for an active Ornstein-Uhlenbeck particle (AOUP), free or in a confining potential. For the free-particle case, we compute the rate function analytically in d-dimensions from a saddle- ...

The growing demands on compact and high-definition single-photon avalanche diode (SPAD) arrays have motivated researchers to explore pixel miniaturization techniques to achieve sub-10 μm pixels. The scaling of the SPAD pixel size has an impact on key perfo ...

We study the asymptotic behavior of the N-clock model, a nearest neighbors ferromagnetic spin model on the d-dimensional cubic epsilon-lattice in which the spin field is constrained to take values in a discretization S-N of the unit circle S-1 consisting o ...

This thesis focuses on the numerical analysis of partial differential equations (PDEs) with an emphasis on first and second-order fully nonlinear PDEs. The main goal is the design of numerical methods to solve a variety of equations such as orthogonal maps ...

We introduce a new numerical method for the time-dependent Maxwell equations on unstructured meshes in two space dimensions. This relies on the introduction of a new mesh, which is the barycentric-dual cellular complex of the starting simplicial mesh, and ...

Stochastic optimization is a popular modeling paradigm for decision-making under uncertainty and has a wide spectrum of applications in management science, economics and engineering. However, the stochastic optimization models one faces in practice are int ...
