As a unified data repository, data lake plays a vital role in enterprise data management and analysis. It composes the raw files into tables that are processed in-situ by various computation engines and applications. Therefore, the read performance of the ...

We introduce a new volumetric sheen BRDF that approximates scattering observed in surfaces covered with normally-oriented fibers. Our previous sheen model was motivated by measured cloth reflectance, but lacked significant backward scattering. The model pr ...

To benefit from the cloud’s higher elasticity and price-efficiency, most modern data-lake engines support S3-like cloud object storage (COS) services as their optional or preferred underlying storage. Meanwhile, the widespread column stores, such as Parque ...

The heterogeneity of today's Web sources requires information retrieval (IR) systems to handle multi-modal queries. Such queries define a user's information needs by different data modalities, such as keywords, hashtags, user profiles, and other media. Rec ...

Image-based retrieval in large Earth observation archives is difficult, because one needs to navigate across thousands of candidate matches only with the proposition image as a guide. By using text as a query language, the retrieval system gains in usabili ...

Pulsatile jet propulsion is a highly energy-efficient swimming mode used by various species of aquatic animals that continues to inspire engineers of underwater vehicles. Here, we present a bio-inspired jet propulsor that combines the flexible hull of a je ...

This paper introduces an approach to supporting high-dimensional data cubes at interactive query speeds and moderate storage cost. The approach is based on binary(-domain) data cubes that are judiciously partially materialized; the missing information can ...

Byzantine Reliable Broadcast (BRB) is a fundamental distributed computing primitive, with applications ranging from notifications to asynchronous payment systems. Motivated by practical consideration, we study Client-Server Byzantine Reliable Broadcast (CS ...

Digital data is a gold mine for modern journalism. However, datasets which interest journalists are extremely heterogeneous, ranging from highly structured (relational databases), semi-structured (JSON, XML, HTML), graphs (e.g., RDF), and text. Journalists ...

Database workloads have significantly evolved in the past twenty years. Traditional database systems that are mainly used to serve Online Transactional Processing (OLTP) workloads evolved into specialized database systems that are optimized for particular ...
