The global imperative to transition from fossil fuel-based energy sources to renewable alternatives has become increasingly urgent in the pursuit of sustainable and renewable power generation. This paradigm shift necessitates innovative approaches to manag ...

We investigate the problem of fluid injection at constant pressure in a 2D Discrete Fracture Network (DFN) with randomly oriented and uniformly distributed frictionally-stable fractures. We show that this problem shares similarities with the simpler scenar ...

Oxide inclusions are inevitably present in steel as a direct consequence of the steelmaking process; as a result, a cubic centimetre of modern steel will generally contain about a million of these hard and brittle micrometre-sized ceramic particles. Inclus ...

This paper presents a method to determine the optimal location, energy capacity, and power rating of distributed battery energy storage systems at multiple voltage levels to accomplish grid control and reserve provision. We model operational scenarios at a ...

Load-bearing systems (structures) in buildings and infrastructure contribute to a significant share of adverse environmental impacts (EI) because of resource- and energy-intensive fabrication. A currently overlooked circular economy strategy to reduce EI i ...

One of the main challenges for certain electricity production technologies (e.g. renewables) is the capability to supply energy according to the demand. It follows that storing energy is a possible solution to the inadequacy between production and demand. ...

Small hydropower plants can improve their proficiency if they are able to become more flexible on power production, answering the need of peak energy demand, following the needs of the energy market and providing ancillary services in the electricity suppl ...

Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) have developed to a mature technology, able to achieve electrical efficiencies beyond 60%. This makes them particularly suitable for off-grid applications, where SOFCs can supply both electricity and heat at high efficiency. C ...

Only 42 % of the mean annual production of large hydropower plants in the Swiss Alps is stored in their reservoirs. Once the reservoirs are full at the end of the summer semester, plants are operated as run-on-the-river in order to avoid spilling. A signif ...

Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) are approaching commercialization to improve power production efficiency. Currently, cost and lifetime reliability limit their spread in the market. The SOFC is ceramic-based, but refractory metal alloys are in fact the major ...

Carbon capture and utilization are promising to tackle fossil-fuel depletion and climate change. CO2 hydrogenation can synthesize various chemicals and fuels, such as methanol, formic acid, urea, and methane. CO2-to-methanol integrated with solid-oxide ele ...

With the Energy Strategy 2050, Switzerland wishes to focus on balanced utilization of hydropower potentials and new renewable energy sources to cope with nuclear energy phasing out. Integration of large amounts of new renewable energies such as wind and so ...

With the advent of material science, high-performance steel materials have been developed for seismic applications that potentially reduce the earthquake-induced collapse risk of steel frame buildings. The High Yield Point (HYP400) steel is one of those ma ...

Multiple research works and power systems operational practices have qualitatively associated the progressive connection of stochastic renewable energy resources with the increase of power systems reserve requirements. At the same time, the price and techn ...

The capacity of electrical distribution systems of hosting photo-voltaic (PV) generation is limited due to the requirements of distribution system operators (DSOs) to respect statutory voltage levels along feeders and not exceed line current limits. Tradit ...

The recent development of high-strength (HSS) weldable steels has enlarged the range of design alternatives for the optimization of high-head steel-lined pressure tunnels and shafts (SLPT&S) in the hydropower industry. With the liberalization of the Europe ...

The total storage capacity of the reservoirs in Switzerland represents only 42% of their annual production of electricity, but secures approximately 100% of hydropower’s contribution to the winter electricity supply. In order to avoid spilling, the storage ...

Due to the penetration of alternative renewable energies, the stabilization of the electrical power network relies on the off-design operation of turbines and pump-turbines in hydro-power plants. The occurrence of cavitation is however a common phenomenon ...

Swiss electricity companies are faced with uncertainty with regards to the future operation of nuclear power plants in the country. After Fukushima in 2011, the government decided on a gradual phase-out, but only provided a tentative planning. Hence, no ne ...

A method to quantify the equivalent storage capacity inherent the operation of thermostatically controlled loads (TCLs) is developed. Equivalent storage capacity is defined as the amount of power and electricity consumption which can be deferred or anticip ...
