This research investigates the application of additively manufactured crack-arresting features (CAFs), designed from tough and soft polymers, in enhancing the performance of thick glass fiber-reinforced polymer composite-epoxy adhesive joints found in wind ...

Porous rocks have long been the focus of intense research driven by their importance in our society as host to our most essential resources (oil, gas, water, geothermal energy, etc), yet their rheology remains poorly understood. With increasing depth, poro ...

We investigate the problem of fluid injection at constant pressure in a 2D Discrete Fracture Network (DFN) with randomly oriented and uniformly distributed frictionally-stable fractures. We show that this problem shares similarities with the simpler scenar ...

Hybrid adhesives can be developed using commercially available adhesive materials and customized to the required loading conditions. In this paper, SPABONDTM 820HTA (non-toughened) and SPABONDTM 840HTA (toughened) adhesives are hybridized by two strategies ...

The use of molecular dynamics (MD) simulations has led to promising results to unravel the atomistic origins of adhesive wear, and in particular for the onset of wear at nanoscale surface asperities. However, MD simulations come with a high computational c ...

Cemented granular materials are abundant in nature and are often artificially produced. Their macroscopic behaviour is driven by small-scale material processes, which are generally classified as: grain breakage, cement damage and fragment rearrangement. Th ...

Applying elastic deformation can tune a material's physical properties locally and reversibly. Spatially modulated lattice deformation can create a bandgap gradient, favoring photogenerated charge separation and collection in optoelectronic devices. These ...

Nanogap electrodes (NGEs) are a fundamental structure for the exploration of nanoscale phenomena. In this paper, we describe the fabrication and the electro-mechanical characterization of tunable tunneling NGEs on a stretchable PDMS substrate. Bottom-up ca ...

Dislocation multiplication in plasticity research is often connected to the picture of a Frank-Read source. Although it is known that this picture is not applicable after easy glide deformation, plasticity theories often assume Frank-Read-type models for d ...

A material is intrinsically ductile under Mode I loading when the critical stress intensity K-Ie for dislocation emission is lower than the critical stress intensity K-Ic for cleavage. K-Ie is usually evaluated using the approximate Rice theory, which pred ...

Autogenous shrinkage is the unrestrained volume change of cementitious materials occurring at con-stant temperature without any change in mass. It occurs as a consequence of self-desiccation (de-crease of internal relative humidity) and increasing capillar ...

Solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) stacks are extremely vulnerable to mechanical failures in any of their constituents, which ultimately lead to cell cracking. Like all devices, distinct failure sequences arise from different events or design particularities. Th ...

The reduction of the tensile stress contained in GaN layers grown oil sapphire by metalorganic vapor phase epitaxy (MOVPE) is achieved using a low density of initial GaN crystallites. The template layers exhibit a significant reduction in dislocation densi ...

During reheating and post-processing of thermoplastic-based composites, deconsolidation is often observed: the volume fraction fibre decreases and the void content increases. In this article, the phenomena leading to deconsolidation are investigated, with ...
