Achieving both volatile and nonvolatile resistive switching in the same material platform is a key milestone towards the development of dense hardware-based neuromorphic computing. We show that, by suitable choice of electrode metals, a single oxide film c ...

Molecular junctions represent a fascinating frontier in the realm of nanotechnology and are one of the smallest optoelectronic devices possible, consisting of individual molecules or a group of molecules that serve as the active element sandwiched between ...

This work presents a study of p-type passivating contacts based on SiCx formed via a rapid thermal processing (RTP) step, using conditions compatible with the firing used to sinter screen-printed metallization pastes in industry. The contributions of the t ...

The water splitting is an appealing approach to fulfil the demand of energy without any global concerns. The oxygen evolution reaction is one of way to achieve unlimited energy from water but the low stability, high energy required to drive the reaction (o ...

Transport through quantum coherent conductors, such as atomic junctions, is described by conduction channels. Information about the number of channels and their transmissions can be extracted from various sources, such as multiple Andreev reflections, dyna ...

In this thesis several advances are made to the emerging field of 3D printed mechanical sensors. Techniques and processes were developed to enable the integration of highly conductive, and capacitive and piezoresistive sensing features embedded within 3D p ...

Sight restoration through retinal prostheses was still a mere dream a century ago. Current challenges are even greater: providing a quantitatively and qualitatively useful artificial vision to late blind patients. Existing approaches all face engineering a ...

The paper deals with the preparation and investigation of a series of polymer dispersed liquid crystals (PDLCs) based on polysulfone matrix and an azomethine liquid crystal. The PDLC systems were prepared by thermal induced phase separation method. Their m ...

The technological evolution in materials science and microengineering favored the production of advanced visual prostheses useful for fighting blindness and to improve patients quality of life. Visual prostheses aim at replacing lost visual functions by ar ...

Polymer-derived ceramics (PDC) have recently gained increased interest in the field of bioceramics. Among PDC's, carbon-rich silicon oxycarbide ceramics (SiOC) possess good combined electrical and mechanical properties. Their durability in aggressive envir ...

Donor dopants in oxide semiconductors are compensated not only by valuable electrons but also by other point defects, leading to a decrease in electric conductivity and infrared absorption. We demonstrate that the electron compensation mechanism in Ga dope ...

Atomically thin rhenium disulphide (ReS2) is a member of the transition metal dichalcogenide family of materials. This two-dimensional semiconductor is characterized by weak interlayer coupling and a distorted 1T structure, which leads to anisotropy in ele ...

Thin epitaxial films have a great potential to be used in real life applications, such as oxide-on-silicon. However, they often contain a large amount of defects, leading to an enhanced electrical conductivity. This could be desirable in some applications ...

We study the dependence of the electrical conductivity on the gold concentration of Au-implanted polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) and alumina nanocomposite thin films. For Au contents larger than a critical concentration, the conductivity of Au-PMMA and Au-al ...

The design of functional structures from primary building blocks requires a thorough understanding of how size, shape, and particle-particle interactions steer the assembly process. Specifically, for electrically conductive networks build from carbon nanot ...

The critical path approximation ('CPA') is integrated with a lattice-based approach to percolation to provide a model for conductivity in nanofiber-based composites. Our treatment incorporates a recent estimate for the anisotropy in tunneling-based conduct ...

We studied the changes in the optical properties of the RVO3 series (R = Sr, Ca, La, Y) using band structure calculations. These oxides present a transition from a non-magnetic metallic phase in SrVO3-CaVO3, to an antiferromagnetic insulator state in LaVO3 ...

Over the last decade, a growing interest in nanochemistry has emerged due to the interesting features of nanomaterials that vary with size, shape and surface structure. In particular, metal nanoparticles have received much attention due to their properties ...

Photovoltaic retinal prostheses theoretically offer the possibility of a standalone high-resolution electrical stimulation of the retina. However, achieving focused epiretinal stimulation is particularly challenging, because of axonal activation and electr ...

Scaling down to nanometer size fluidic conduits has opened a new window into the world of sensing and manipulation of nanoscale species. Thousands of publications and hundreds of patents in this field are only a starting point for exploring and manipulatin ...
