Four recent trends have emerged in the evolution of authenticated encryption schemes: (1) Regarding simplicity, the adoption of public permutations as primitives allows for sparing a key schedule and the need for storing round keys; (2) using the sums of p ...

Post-quantum cryptography is a branch of cryptography which deals with cryptographic algorithms whose hardness assumptions are not based on problems known to be solvable by a quantum computer, such as the RSA problem, factoring or discrete logarithms. This ...

Machine intelligence greatly impacts almost all domains of our societies. It is profoundly changing the field of mechanical engineering with new technical possibilities and processes. The education of future engineers also needs to adapt in terms of techni ...

Making decisions is part and parcel of being human. Among a set of actions, we want to choose the one that has the highest reward. But the uncertainty of the outcome prevents us from always making the right decision. Making decisions under uncertainty can ...

Authenticated Encryption (AE) is a symmetric key cryptographic primitive that ensures confidentiality and authenticity of processed messages at the same time. The research of AE as a primitive in its own right started in 2000. The security goals of AE wer ...

In developing partial least squares calibration models, selecting the number of latent variables used for their construction to minimize both model bias and model variance remains a challenge. Several metrics exist for incorporating these trade-offs, but t ...

This thesis develops models of activity and destination choices in pedestrian facilities from WiFi traces. We adapt the activity-based travel demand analysis of urban mobility to pedestrians and to digital footprints. We are interested in understanding the ...

Collision-induced dissociation (CID) is a key technique used in mass spectrometry-based peptide sequencing. Collisionally activated peptides undergo statistical dissociation, forming a series of backbone fragment ions that reflect their amino acid (AA) seq ...

This research investigates the measurement of perceptions by means of adjectives freely reported by respondents in semi-open questions. It involved the use of semi-open responses of 1'763 Swiss individuals to develop indicators for a latent variable repres ...

Non-malleable codes, defined by Dziembowski, Pietrzak and Wichs (ICS ’10), provide roughly the following guarantee: if a codeword c encoding some message x is tampered to c' = f(c) such that c c, then the tampered message x contained in c reveals no inf ...

Latent class models are a convenient and intuitive way to introduce taste heterogeneity in discrete choice models by relating attributes of the decision makers with unobserved behavioral classes, hence allowing for a more accurate market segmentation. Esti ...

Compromise alternatives have an intermediate performance on each or most attributes rather than having a poor performance on some attributes and a strong performance on others. The relative popularity of compromise alternatives among decision-makers has be ...

Recent interest in the topic of random scale heterogeneity in discrete choice data has led to the development of specialised tools such as the G-MNL model, as well as repeated claims that studies which fail to separate scale heterogeneity from heterogeneit ...

This thesis presents work on the efficiency and security of cryptographic software. First it describes several efforts to construct very efficient implementations of cryptographic primitives. These include the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) as well as ...

We study monotone convex functions psi : L-0 (Omega, F, P) -> (-infinity, infinity] and derive a dual representation as well as conditions that ensure the existence of a sigma-additive subgradient. The results are motivated by applications in economic agen ...

Supply chains (SC) are complex systems in which human beings play a key role. Whereas human impact is often taken into account in simulation models in terms of physical flows (material handling, fabrication), it is far less the case in terms of information ...

Making the best choice when faced with a chain of decisions requires a person to judge both anticipated outcomes and future actions. Although economic decision-making models account for both risk and reward in single-choice contexts, there is a dearth of s ...

Discrete choice models are defined conditional to the analyst's knowledge of the actual choice set. The common practice for many years has been to assume that individual-based choice sets can be deterministically generated on the basis of the choice contex ...

Studying the interaction of spin-polarized currents with the magnetization configuration is of high interest due to the possible applications and the novel physics involved. High-resolution magnetic imaging is one of the key techniques necessary for a bett ...

Decision making under risk is central to human behavior. Economic decision theory suggests that value, risk, and risk aversion influence choice behavior. Although previous studies identified neural correlates of decision parameters, the contribution of the ...
