Photoplethysmography (PPG) is a widely emerging method to assess vascular health in humans. The origins of the signal of reflective PPG on peripheral arteries have not been thoroughly investigated. We aimed to identify and quantify the optical and biomecha ...

The log law of the wall, joining the inner, near-wall mean velocity profile (MVP) in wall-bounded turbulent flows to the outer region, has been a permanent fixture of turbulence research for over hundred years, but there is still no general agreement on th ...

The overground speed is a key component of running analysis. Today, most speed estimation wearable systems are based on GNSS technology. However, these devices can suffer from sparse communication with the satellites and have a high-power consumption. In t ...

We characterize the solution of a broad class of convex optimization problems that address the reconstruction of a function from a finite number of linear measurements. The underlying hypothesis is that the solution is decomposable as a finite sum of compo ...

Europium, terbium, dysprosium, and samarium are the main trivalent lanthanide ions emitting in the visible spectrum. In this work, the potential of these ions for colorimetric applications and colour reproduction was studied. The conversion of spectral dat ...

The revelation of mechanism bifurcation is essential in the design and analysis of reconfigurable mechanisms. The first- and second-order based methods have successfully revealed the bifurcation of mechanisms. However, they fail in the novel Schatz-inspire ...

Lanthanides (Ln) usually occur in the +3, or more recently the +2, oxidation states. The only example of an isolated molecular Ln(4+) so far remains Ce4+. Here we show that the +4 oxidation state is also accessible in a molecular compound of terbium as dem ...

Blue III-nitride light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are widely used nowadays in solid-state lighting, as white light can be produced by combining yellow phosphors and blue LEDs. This technology has the advantage to have a higher luminous efficiency than incandes ...

Glucose is a major source of energy for most living organisms, and its aberrant uptake is linked to many pathological conditions. However, our understanding of disease-associated glucose flux is limited owing to the lack of robust tools. To date, positron- ...

In solid mechanics, linear structures often exhibit (local) nonlinear behavior when close to failure. For instance, the elastic deformation of a structure becomes plastic after being deformed beyond recovery. To properly assess such problems in a real-life ...

As a consequence of recent technological advances in the field of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), results can now be made available in real-time. This allows for novel applications such as online quality assurance of the acquisition, intra-op ...

Large efforts have been devoted in the past to understanding size effect in shear failures of members without transverse reinforcement. Experimental works have demonstrated that increasing the size reduces the nominal shear strength provided that the failu ...

Single-photon avalanche diode (SPAD) arrays have recently emerged as promising detectors for many wide-field fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy (FLIM) applications, thanks to their picosecond range temporal resolution, single-photon sensitivity and f ...

The miniaturization of nanometer-sized multicolor fluorescent features is of continuous significance for counterfeit security features, data storage, and sensors. Recent advances in engineering of stimuli-responsive supramolecular polymeric materials that ...

We investigate the composition and temperature (10-450 K) dependence of the Yb valence in YbMn6Ge6-xSnx (x = 0.0, 3.8, 4.2, 4.4, and 5.5) using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS). The observed change in the Yb valence with composition (from v simil ...

Socio-economic related properties of a city grow faster than a linear relationship with the population, in a log–log plot, the so-called superlinear scaling. Conversely, the larger a city, the more efficient it is in the use of its infrastructure, leading ...

In this paper, we present a new mechanical model for biped locomotion, composed of three linear pendulums (one per leg and one for the whole upper body) to describe stance, swing and torso dynamics. In addition to a double support phase, this model has dif ...

Background: Pattern recognition (PR) based strategies for the control of myoelectric upper limb prostheses are generally evaluated through offline classification accuracy, which is an admittedly useful metric, but insufficient to discuss functional perform ...

This paper focuses on the problem of controlling an ensemble of heterogeneous resources connected to an elec- trical grid at the same point of common coupling (PCC). The controller receives an aggregate power setpoint for the ensemble in real time and trac ...

This paper addresses the problem of correlation estimation in sets of compressed images. We consider a framework where images are represented under the form of linear measurements due to low complexity sensing or security requirements. We assume that the i ...
