Whereas pulse-echo ultrasound imaging relied on focused acoustic waves since its inception, the last two decades have seen the development of techniques based on unfocused waves, including ultrafast ultrasound imaging. In large part due to the emergence of ...

Reciprocity guarantees that in most media, sound transmission is symmetric between two points of space when the location of the source and receiver are interchanged. This fundamental law can be broken in non-linear media, often at the cost of detrimental i ...

Controlling audible sound requires inherently broadband and subwavelength acoustic solutions, which are to date, crucially missing. This includes current noise absorption methods, such as porous materials or acoustic resonators, which are typically ineffic ...

The Dependent Object Type (DOT) calculus was designed to put Scala on a sound basis, but while DOT relies on structural subtyping, Scala is a fundamentally class-based language. This impedance mismatch means that a proof of DOT soundness by itself is ...

Geomembrane systems have been used in dams and reservoirs as rehabilitation technology since several decades and are now used worldwide. They act as impervious layer to prevent and mitigate water leakage and damage to structures. They meet the needs of man ...

Estimating the impedance of a grid-connected device or of a grid at the point of common coupling is important for evaluating the interaction between them. Impedance measurement involves a perturbation injection device, that perturbs the system, and a measu ...

Air traffic noise emissions are responsible for a significant part of the overall environmental noise, especially in the vicinity of airports. Exposure to environmental noise is known to negatively impact health and to be associated with cardiovascular dis ...

Environmental noise, mostly related to human activities, has an immense impact on public health. The development of noise reduction technologies is paramount in addressing this problem. Because of practical and economic reasons, a compact, broadband, light ...

Sound absorption at low frequencies still remains a challenge in both scientific research and engineering practice. Natural porous materials are ineffective in this frequency range, as well as acoustic resonators which present too narrow bandwidth of absor ...

In the majority of active sound absorbing systems, a conventional electrodynamic loudspeaker is used as a controlled source. However, particular situations may require an actuator that is more resistant to harsh environments, adjustable in shape, and light ...

Understanding the influence of running-induced acute fatigue on the homeostasis of the body is essential to mitigate the adverse effects and optimize positive adaptations to training. Fatigue is a multifactorial phenomenon, which influences biomechanical, ...

Detecting anomalies in sound data has recently received significant attention due to the increasing number of implementations of sound condition monitoring solutions for critical assets. In this context, changing operating conditions impose significant dom ...

For safe and efficient operation, mobile robots need to perceive their environment, and in particular, perform tasks such as obstacle detection, localization, and mapping. Although robots are often equipped with microphones and speakers, the audio modality ...

Thin-film lithium niobate (LNO) has been identified as a promising material platform for enabling high electromechanical coupling and low-loss piezoelectric resonators for filtering applications. In this work, the design and fabrication of fundamental shea ...

Polynomial Networks (PNs) have demonstrated promising performance on face and image recognition recently. However, robustness of PNs is unclear and thus obtaining certificates becomes imperative for enabling their adoption in real-world applications. Exist ...

The acoustics of a room often refer to the quality of the room in terms of sound recording as well as sound reproduction. At low frequencies, where the wavelengths are of the same order of magnitude with the dimensions of the room, due to the standing wave ...

The present paper discusses the climatic effects of humidity and temperature on cochlear implant functioning and the quality of the electrical sound signal. MATLAB Simulink simulations were prepared, offering insights into signal behavior under such climat ...

This paper introduces a novel approach for extracting speaker embeddings from audio mixtures of multiple overlapping voices. This approach is based on a multi-task neural network. The network first extracts a latent feature for each direction. This feature ...

New materialism considers that the world and its histories are produced by a range of material forces that extend from the physical and the biological to the psychological, social and cultural. In recognizing that heritage is not held in objects alone, new ...

Laser phase noise remains a limiting factor in many experimental settings, including metrology, time-keeping, as well as quantum optics. Hitherto this issue was addressed at low frequencies ranging from well below 1 Hz to maximally 100 kHz. However, a wide ...
