In recent years, wind farm layout optimization (WFLO) has been extendedly developed to address the minimization of turbine wake effects in a wind farm. Considering that increasing the degrees of freedom in the decision space can lead to more efficient solu ...

Energy demand for cooling of buildings is projected to drastically increase in the next decades. Urban areas in tropical Asia are expected to contribute a major share to this growing demand. These areas are characterized by a high urban density and a diver ...

An important share of building environmental impacts is embodied in load-bearing structures because of their large material mass and energy-intensive fabrication process. To reduce substantially material consumption and waste caused by the construction ind ...

The development of new solid-state electrolytes is a key step in improving the performance and safety of battery technology. Although the use of first-principle methods has proved invaluable in better understanding the process at play in these materials, ...

The calculation of the electronic structure of chemical systems, necessitates computationally expensive approximations to the time-independent electronic Schrödinger equation in order to yield static properties in good agreement with experimental results. ...

The significant progress that has been made in recent years both in hardware implementations and in numerical computing has rendered real-time optimization-based control a viable option when it comes to advanced industrial applications. At the same time, t ...

Optimal operating conditions for a process plant are typically obtained via model based optimization. However, due to modeling errors, the operating conditions found are often sub-optimal or, worse, they can violate critical process constraints. Hence, mod ...

Adaptive robust optimization problems are usually solved approximately by restricting the adaptive decisions to simple parametric decision rules. However, the corresponding approximation error can be substantial. In this paper we show that two-stage robust ...

This work presents an algorithmic scheme for solving the infinite-time constrained linear quadratic regulation problem. We employ an accelerated version of a popular proximal gradient scheme, commonly known as the Forward-Backward Splitting (FBS), and prov ...

We consider

L ^{ 1 }

-TV regularization of univariate signals with values on the real line or on the unit circle. While the real data space leads to a convex optimization problem, the problem is nonconvex for circle-valued data. In this paper, we deriv ...

We consider the problem of boolean compressed sensing, which is alternatively known as group testing. The goal is to recover a small number of defective items in a large set from a few collective binary tests. This problem can be formulated as a binary lin ...

The Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) method and the Genetic Algorithm (GA) were used to derive formulas for determining the velocity and concentration profiles in sheet flows. Specifically, these evolutionary optimization algorithms were used in conjuncti ...

The results from a third structure determination by powder diffractometry (SDPD) round robin are discussed. From the 175 potential participants having downloaded the powder data, nine sent a total of 12 solutions (8 and 4 for samples I and 2, respectively, ...

This communication addresses the problem of any simulation tool: the accurate and efficient sampling of a physical observable with respect to a parameter. A popular sampling technique is the uniform sampling combined with a straight-line interpolation for ...

In a recent work, a frequency method based on linear programming is proposed to design fixed-order linearly parameterized controllers for stable linear multi- model SISO systems. The method is based on the shaping of the open-loop transfer functions in the ...

The efficiency of social insect colonies critically depends on their ability to efficiently allocate workers to the various tasks which need to be performed. While numerous models have investigated the mechanisms allowing an efficient colony response to ex ...

In fluidized-bed gas-phase polymerization reactors, several grades of polyethylene are produced in the same equipment by changing the operating conditions. Transitions between the different grades are rather slow and result in the production of a considera ...

Improving the productivity of fed-batch filamentous fungal fermentations can be formulated as a dynamic optimization problem. However, numerical optimization based on a nominal process model is typically insufficient when uncertainty in the form of model m ...
