Background and Objective: Computational models of the cardiovascular system allow for a detailed and quantitative investigation of both physiological and pathological conditions, thanks to their ability to combine clinical-possibly patient-specific-data wi ...

Tissue wounds are a significant challenge for the healthcare system, affecting millions globally. Current methods like suturing and stapling have limitations as they inadequately cover the wound, fail to prevent fluid leakage, and increase the risk of infe ...

Amyloidosis refers to a range of medical conditions in which misshapen proteins accumulate in various organs and tissues, forming insoluble fibrils. Cardiac amyloidosis is frequently linked to the buildup of misfolded transthyretin (TTR) or immunoglobulin ...

We present a discriminative clustering approach in which the feature representation can be learned from data and moreover leverage labeled data. Representation learning can give a similarity-based clustering method the ability to automatically adapt to an ...

Efforts to understand spinal cord injury (SCI) and other complex neurotrauma disorders at the pre-clinical level have shown progress in recent years. However, successful translation of basic research into clinical practice has been slow, partly because of ...

With the emergence of social networks and improvements in the internet speed, the video data has become an ever-increasing portion of the global internet traffic. Besides the content, the quality of a video sequence is an important issue at the user end wh ...

Magnetic manipulation of objects within the body is a growing field of research since the second half of the last century. Therapeutic and diagnostic capabilities offered by such technology are extended with the clinical need to make procedures less invasi ...

Background. Lung ultrasonography (LUS) is a promising pragmatic risk-stratification tool in coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). This study describes and compares LUS characteristics between patients with different clinical outcomes. ...

Difficult tracheal intubation assessment is an important research topic in anesthesia as failed intubations are important causes of mortality in anesthetic practice. The modified Mallampati score is widely used, alone or in conjunction with other criteria, ...

A common problem for automatic speech recognition systems is how to recognize words that they did not see during training. Currently there is no established method of evaluating different techniques for tackling this problem. We propose using the CommonVoi ...

Experimental and numerical investigations were performed in order to develop a technique of active flow control by aspiration applied to an annular axial compressor cascade. Continuous aspiration is applied through shaped slots located on the suction side ...

Background Coercion in psychiatry is a controversial issue. Identifying its predictors and their interaction using traditional statistical methods is difficult, given the large number of variables involved. The purpose of this study was to use machine-lear ...

Introduction: Bag-valve-mask ventilation is the first-line ventilation method during cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Risks include excessive volume delivery and gastric insufflation, the latter increasing the risk of pneumonia. The efficacy of ventila ...

BACKGROUND: An auditory perceptual learning paradigm was used to investigate whether implicit memories are formed during general anesthesia. METHODS: Eighty-seven patients who had an American Society of Anesthesiologists physical status of I-III and were s ...

The cardiovascular system can be macro-modelled as a collection of coupled oscillators. Recently, the use of mutual couplings of these oscillators to characterize the state of the system during anaesthesia has been proposed. Assuming that the synchronizati ...

Purpose of review ...

Induction of anesthesia with propofol is a largely adopted technique in hospital environments. The correct dosage of this compound is essential to avoid under- or over-anesthesia that may result in serious side-effects. Therefore, in clinical settings, lon ...

In anesthesiology, the detection and anticipation of difficult tracheal intubation is crucial for patient safety. When undergoing general anesthesia, a patient who is unexpectedly difficult to intubate risks potential life-threatening complications with po ...

With the development of neural networks based machine learning and their usage in mission critical applications, voices are rising against the \textit{black box} aspect of neural networks as it becomes crucial to understand their limits and capabilities. W ...
